โ€ข Overcoming common misconceptions and resistance around having a carer live in

โ€ข How clients are matched with carers โ€” and why compatibility and companionship
matter

โ€ข The process from initial consultation to setting up care with trusted partners

โ€ข Managing breaks, shifts, and maintaining healthy work-life balance for carers

โ€ข Why awareness and advocacy are key to making live-in care a recognised,
accessible option.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Kate Marston ACIPD of People Support on my podcast YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. about the importance of good investigation practice. As a member of a very active HR independent group, Iโ€™ve heard from a number of HR professionals who attended Kateโ€™s training course and who highly recommend it. Anyone employing people must know how to manage - if and when there is conflict, or if things โ€˜go wrongโ€™ - or know who to call on for help.

If you are an individual, a family member, a case manager, who employs or manages care staff in the home, hereโ€™s the podcast episode if youโ€™ve not heard it before.

The next episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. will be published at the end of next week. Donโ€™t miss my chat with Janet Shreeve specifically about live-in care.

People often tell me, โ€œYou must have so much patience to do that kind of work.โ€ They say it with a soft voice and a little head tilt. I know they mean it as a compliment, but theyโ€™ve got it wrong.

Patience is what you use when youโ€™re waiting in line at the supermarket and the person ahead of you is paying in pennies. Patience is what you summon when your Wi-Fi goes down. Patience is about waiting for something to end.

Support work isnโ€™t about waiting. Itโ€™s about being, being present, being responsive, being humble enough to realize that youโ€™re not the main character in someone elseโ€™s story.

The idea that good support work is rooted in patience sells both the worker and the person they support short. It makes it sound like weโ€™re enduring something, like the person with a disability is a test of our goodness.

The best support workers Iโ€™ve met donโ€™t have halos of patience hovering over their heads. They have skills. They know how to listen beyond words. They notice tiny details, a shift in tone, a glance, a pause... and they adjust. They can turn frustration into collaboration. They know how to make space for someoneโ€™s independence without stepping in to โ€œfixโ€ everything.

Patience says, โ€œIโ€™ll wait for you to catch up.โ€
Good support says, โ€œIโ€™ll walk with you, at your pace, and learn the rhythm of your stride.โ€

So no, disability support work doesnโ€™t take patience. It takes respect. It takes skill.

Do you go on holiday and come back with scenarios in your head that apply to work?

The Hubby and I returned from a lovely holiday in Florida, USA where on my โ€˜to do listโ€™ was a visit to the Kennedy Space Centre. I remember being enthralled by the space programme from a young age. I remember my excitement whenever there was a programme about the space shuttles on TV. I couldnโ€™t get enough of dreaming that the sky isnโ€™t the limit, there is much more out there to explore. But after the Challenger and Columbia loss of lives, my heart sank and I lost some interest โ€“ until my daughter did an interview with people working on the Mars programme.

SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA

If ever there were a lesson for senior management, it is from the horrific experience of the loss of seven astronauts on the return to earth of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Our one-day visit to the Space Centre was so informative, a fabulous experience. We bought a ticket that took us behind the scenes, deeper into exploring this massive place and learning so much more.

When we returned to my brother and his wifeโ€™s home, after our very memorable, and too short visit, we watched the documentary on Columbia โ€“ a 4-part series. It was incredibly emotional.

LESSON FOR MANAGEMENT

Why have I said itโ€™s a lesson for senior management, well really, anyone in a management role? It appears that because of NASAโ€™s hierarchical organisation and official reporting channels, those employees at the bottom of the chain, those who were doing their jobs, were not listened to. The chain of command did not make it easy for a subordinate to bring their concerns, even regarding safety, direct to senior managers. Many mistakes are made in organisations, and thatโ€™s usually a learning curve. But where life is involved, it is a very difficult way to learn.

There are heart-rendering interviews in the documentary with families of the astronauts who died on this mission. There are interviews with those people who tried to get management to go further to investigate an observed obstacle that appeared to hit the wing of the shuttle and exploded in cloud-like smoke. There are interviews with senior people in NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), interviews with investigators, and with ordinary people in the street.

There have been other space disasters in our quest to land on the Moon and on Mars and send people and objects into space. The documentary on Columbia and other space missions can be seen on many media channels so I wonโ€™t go into detail. Itโ€™s surely of great importance that weโ€™ve come this far.

What I would say is, from what Iโ€™ve seen, any manager can learn a lessons from Columbia, the documentary.

What is the organisation culture? Ask questions of your people. Seek ways to improve organisational culture, communication, management style. Most importantly do not neglect your own personal development.

Can you imagine having people working in your home 24/7, 365 days a year? Not only do you not have privacy but all your possessions, your conversations, your family life are known and heard by others. Care staff have to abide by privacy rules, but it doesnโ€™t mean that the families feel comfortable having them in their homes. Many years ago one of my clients told me that when she and her husband wanted a private conversation, they went to sit in their car which was parked in their driveway.

Although staff may become โ€œpart of the familyโ€, it is not easy when you employ. Businesses train managers to manage people. What training to parents or individuals have when they employ care staff in their homes?

I wrote a book to try to help and have found another great review on Amazon of my book Thanks so much to everyone who has reviewed my book, and bought a copy.

These are Kimโ€™s views. These are Kimโ€™s family dynamics. She knows that each person, each family will be different. We have chuckles at the same time as discussing the serious side of things, including the impact on her children, the next generation of carers.

The latest episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. is uploaded. Listen to David Robsonโ€™s talk with me on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Audible and other platforms. David of Mark Bates Ltd, specialists in disability insurance, talks about the importance of ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ when you directly employ care staff in your home. It is distinctly different from home insurance.

โ€œ... So within that, you've got your personal possessions cover. So let's say, for example, if you've got a carer that's broken, a pottery, some plates or some expensive glass, we can actually pick up that claim for an individual. Going back to, sadly, if someone has to be replaced, if someone has to be dismissed immediately due to gross misconduct or negligence, we can help cover the costs of finding another personal assistant and also getting another personal assistant from maybe a care agency temporarily to come in and care for the individual...โ€

How easy do you find images that suit the words that you write? Iโ€™ve been asked a number of times how the illustrations we use in my book came about. I found it difficult to source just the right pictures that worked. I knew that having pictures of real people needs to be thought-through very carefully so as to be inclusive. Itโ€™s a tricky road to navigate. After much consideration I sent a rough sketch of my idea of a plant pot with a face and a plant that looked like hair to my graphic designer 729 Apparel By Rayhaan. I always wondered how he decifered what I was looking for from my very crude pencil sketch. He sent me his first illustrations for some chapters and I loved what heโ€™d done โ€ฆ

Over the years Ray has produced artwork for my book, marketing collateral, from banners, to promotional literature, my fancy table cover for exhibitions, the latest branding as an author and podcast host, the titles to my podcast episodes and much more. Thank you Rayhaan ๐Ÿ’•.
