I am crying 😭

I’ve read hundreds of reports over the years.

Some acknowledge a child’s needs but somehow fail to connect those needs to the support they’re actually entitled to receive.

Some leave parents feeling like they’re exaggerating.

This one was different.

This report is now part of a tribunal case.

And for the first time in a long time, it felt like a professional had simply taken the time to understand the child.

Not to defend a decision.
Not to minimise difficulties.
Not to explain why less support would be enough.

Just to observe.
To listen.
To understand.

The recommendation of 14 hours wasn’t what stayed with me.

It was reading practical recommendations that reflected how this child genuinely experiences school every day.

That’s what a tribunal should be built on.

Not opinions.
Not assumptions.

Evidence.

An EHCP should never be about what is easiest or cheapest to provide.

It should be about identifying a child’s needs and setting out the provision required to meet those needs.

Reading this report reminded me why tribunals matter.

Sometimes they’re the first place where a family’s evidence is truly considered alongside independent professional opinion.

No parent wants to stand in front of a tribunal.

We do it because we want our children to be understood.

And when a professional takes the time to see the child, rather than the budget or the paperwork, it can change everything.

To the Occupational Therapist who wrote this report—thank you for seeing the child first.

“Not enough.”

Today, another family has been told their child doesn’t meet the threshold for an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment.

Despite acknowledging that this child has SEND needs, the decision was still not to assess.

This is exactly why so many parents lose faith in the system.

The SEND Code of Practice is clear that local authorities should consider whether a child may have special educational needs that require provision through an EHCP. Yet time and time again, families are left feeling like they have to prove just how much their child is struggling before anyone will listen.

What people don’t see is what happens after these letters arrive.

The sleepless nights.
The anxiety.
The tears.
The feeling that you’ve somehow failed your child, despite spending every waking moment fighting for them.

Parents shouldn’t have to become legal experts just to access support.

Children shouldn’t have to deteriorate before they’re considered “worthy” of an assessment.

Every refusal comes with a human cost.

Families deserve decisions that genuinely reflect children’s needs, not a system that leaves so many feeling unheard.

How many more parents have to reach breaking point before things change? 🫶🏻

Today, I am tired.

Tired of schools talking about “inclusion” while families are still fighting just to be heard.
Tired of hearing that support exists… when so many parents are left to cope alone.
Tired of the gaslighting.

Parents are exhausted.
Children are being let down.
And families are being made to feel like they are the problem for asking for support that should already exist.

When will the gaslighting stop?
When will support actually come?
When will inclusion become more than just a word used in policies and campaigns?

Because right now, too many families are surviving a system that was supposed to support them. 🤍

Funny how parents and carers get labelled “difficult”…
the moment they stop agreeing and start advocating. 👀

The moment you ask questions.
The moment you push back.
The moment you say, “this isn’t working for my child.”

Suddenly you’re the problem.

But advocating for your child isn’t being difficult.
It’s doing your job as a parent.

Because no one knows your child better than you do.
And no one should have to sit quietly while their child struggles.

If that makes us “difficult”…
then so be it. 🤍

Has it ever occurred to you why there is so much outrage within the SEN community?

Have you taken the time to speak to real parents and carers — the ones living this every single day, doing whatever it takes to support their children?

Have you listened to professionals who have trained for years to understand what children with SEN actually need?

Have you asked educators what they are facing on the ground, and what support they themselves need?

Parents are not asking for more than their children deserve.
They are asking for the chance for them to thrive.
Not to become statistics for political gain.

Instead of relying on consultants, why not step into the reality families are living — and actually listen to those who know this system best?

Stop wasting taxpayers’ money.
Stop blaming the SEN community.
Start taking responsibility.

As a SEN parent, and an advocate for others, I see the reality every single day —
the gaps, the failures, the mental health impact, the unmet need that is ignored time and time again.

Schools are under pressure. Families are at breaking point. Children are being left behind.

This cannot continue.

Real action is needed — before the damage being done becomes impossible to undo.

Because behind every “case” is a child.
And they deserve better.

I feel this is apt, given in the past 2 weeks, we have submitted around 5 EHCNA’s for children, who are already receiving a substantial amount of support within their school settings….

Fighting for support your child is legally entitled to…Having to prove, over and over again, that your child is struggling…

It’s exhausting.

Not because parents don’t want to engage. Not because children don’t need support.

But because the system makes families fight for something that should never have been a battle in the first place.

Behind every application, every appeal, every delay…is a parent who is just tired.

Tired of fighting.Tired of not being heard.Tired of watching their child struggle.

It shouldn’t be this hard. 🤍

“They told me ‘Not enough evidence’.
But THIS is evidence:
Anxiety before school.
Masking all day just to cope.
Falling apart the second he’s safe at home.

For every SEN parent who’s been dismissed, gaslit, or told to wait… I see you. We ARE the evidence. 💚

“High-functioning” autism often means struggling silently… and that’s the hardest part.

Because when a child is seen as “high-functioning,” the world assumes they’re fine.

They can talk.
They make eye contact.
They might even be doing well at school.

So people say, “See? They’re okay.”

But what you don’t see is the effort behind it all.

The constant thinking.
Decoding social cues.
Rehearsing conversations.
Trying to fit in.

You don’t see how exhausting it is to hold it together all day…
only to fall apart at home, where it feels safe.

And that’s the part that hurts the most.

Because “seeming fine” is not the same as being okay.

High-functioning doesn’t mean low need.
It doesn’t mean they don’t need support.

Sometimes it just means they’ve learned how to hide it.

And children shouldn’t have to hide their struggles to be understood.

That’s why advocacy matters.

Because the quiet ones, the “coping” ones, the ones who don’t shout the loudest…

They need support too. 🤍
