Ever wondered what goes into creating those killer tones, thunderous beats, or smooth bass lines you hear in the studio?
In our new series, The Magic Behind the Sound, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the real tools of the trade, the instruments, setups, and stories that shape each artist’s unique sound.

Each episode, we’ll sit down with one of our talented musicians as they walk us through their setup, from guitars and pedals to drums, cymbals and synths, sharing tips, recommendations, and why they love the gear they use.

Whether you’re a fellow musician looking for inspiration, a gearhead who loves the details, or just curious about what goes on behind the studio doors here at Soundmagic, this series is for you.

Whether it’s your very first jam or your hundredth, rehearsals are always smoother when you know what to bring and what to expect. Don’t worry if you forget something, we’ve got plenty of spares to keep the music going.

What to Bring

For Everyone
• Instrument(s) – Guitar, bass, keys, brass, etc.
• Sheet music, lyrics, or setlist – helps keep everyone on track.
• Ear protection - It gets loud, so bring plugs or defenders.
• Energy – Rehearsals work best when everyone comes ready to play.

For Vocalists
• Lyrics or lyric sheets
• Water (hydration is key!)
• If you use your own mic, feel free to bring it, though we’ve got plenty here!

For Guitarists/Bassists
• Your guitar or bass
• Instrument leads (jack cables)
• Picks, strap, capo, slides, batteries, tuners, pedals
• Spare strings (breakages always happen at the worst time!)

For Drummers
• Drumsticks (bring a couple of pairs)
• Cymbals and any special pedals you prefer (we've got loads)
• Practice pad or warm-up gear (optional but handy)

For Keyboardists
• Your own keyboard if you prefer a specific model (we’ve got some in-studio)
• Power leads, pedals, and stands if needed

We’ve got the essentials covered: drum kit, amps, PA, mics, cables, and spare bits and bobs. So if you forget something, no stress, just let us know and we’ll sort you out!

At Soundmagic we keep our rehearsal kits in top shape. Here’s a quick look at us swapping out the drum heads on our beautiful Mapex and Tama kits. We replace them every three months (or sooner if they’re damaged) so you always get the best sound when you step into the room.

We’re proud to be fuelling the music this weekend by supplying drums, amps and more to The Red Lion and The Central, two of the amazing venues involved in this year’s festival.

A lot of the bands on the lineup started out right here at Soundmagic and we can’t wait to see them take the stage.

We’re absolutely buzzing again for another stacked Prestfest Music Festival this weekend!

Many of our regular bands are part of the incredible lineup, so make sure to head to Prestwick from this Friday for a weekend full of live music across multiple venues.

Stay tuned, we’ll also be sharing some behind-the-scenes content on how we support the festival.

One week to go... next Friday is the start of the Pavilion Festival down the Low Green, in Ayr.
3 days of Live entertainment, something for everyone and just a tremendous thing to be happening on your doorstep.
Don't miss it and spend the following week listening to how incredible it was. Get in there, it's gonna be Epic 🤘
There's been huge excitement and crazy good vibes in the studio over the last few months with the build up to this event.
9 of the bands supporting james on the Friday practice here regularly, some twice a week, some are residents with their own room and every one of them are buzzing to get on that stage.. for most it will be their biggest gig so far.

Total respect and admiration for Ewan McVicar, from Kincaidston, fellow Zulu boy, who made this thing happen.
Ewan did a couple of small events in the studio, called TEN, back in the day before his success and breakthrough.
Well chuffed and very proud of the fact the studio has helped in a small way to assist in the development and progression of these local acts and artists.
