Tonight we said the hardest goodbye to our dearest friend, our horse of a life time, our Charlie boy.
Sixteen and a half years you walked our paddocks, raced across cross country tracks with us, gave us your all in the show jumping ring, and took us slowly down the lane on hours and hours of hacking.
You showed us fear, you taught us how to over come it. You taught us trust and showed us how to belive in it, you showed us love and taught us how to treasure it.
leader of the herd, you earned the respect you deserved. You were, you are our precious boy, our horse of a life time.
As the warm sun set, and the bright moon crept through the hollow clouds, you closed your eyes and peacefully slipped away from our paddocks tonight, leaving a legacy and the hugest hole in our hearts.
A Complicated life full of challenges, full of hurdles, but the true thoroughbred you were never stopped trying, always over coming what ever crossed your path. The heart of a lion, the true soul of a horse, your spirit will live with us always.
Fly high Charlie Boy and take your place in the stars. Good night, god bless. Forever in our hearts.

Our love and thoughts are with the families and all affected by the tragic losses yesterday.

BRITISH EVENTING STATEMENT

It is with immense sadness that British Eventing confirms the tragic loss of Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue following separate incidents on Saturday 18th July 2026.

Sophie Fouracre, aged 34, was fatally injured in a cross-country accident riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania, at Swalcliffe Park, Oxfordshire, England.

Hours later at Penrith in Cumbria, Kerry Donoghue, aged 42, died following a cross-country accident riding Carneyhaugh Rua.

At both venues, the event medical teams responded immediately and provided emergency treatment. Despite their best efforts sadly neither rider could be saved.

Both horses were examined by the attending veterinary team and were found to be uninjured.

Rosie Williams, Chief Executive of British Eventing, said: β€œThe British Eventing community is heartbroken. On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Kerry and Sophie's families, friends and loved ones at this devastating time. Our thoughts are also with their fellow competitors, organisers, officials, volunteers and everyone who has been affected by these tragic events.

β€œWe are immensely grateful to the organisers, doctors, paramedics, veterinary teams, officials and emergency services at both events for the professionalism, compassion and care they showed in the most difficult of circumstances.

β€œThe loss of two members of our eventing family on the same day is almost beyond words, and we know the sadness of these events will be felt profoundly across the sport for some time to come.”

In accordance with British Eventing's safety and incident review procedures, comprehensive reviews of both accidents will now be undertaken.

We recognise the impact these tragic events will have across the eventing community. Anyone affected is encouraged to seek support through the British Eventing Support Trust Helpline, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 07780 008877.

We respectfully ask that the privacy of both families is respected during this incredibly difficult time.
