I welcome confirmation from Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins that the Glenshesk Road in Ballycastle will reopen to traffic by 5pm on Monday 1 December.

The road which we know is a key route in and out of Ballycastle towards Armoy, has been closed since March 2024 following a serious embankment failure caused by extreme weather.

This is a hugely significant step forward for local residents, farmers, businesses and all those who rely on the Glenshesk Road every day. I have been consistently calling for its urgent restoration, and I know how frustrating and disruptive this closure has been for the community for such a long period of time.

I want to thank the engineers and contractors who have worked on what has clearly been a complex and challenging repair project. The reopening of the road will come as a real relief to people across the Glens and the wider Ballycastle and Armoy areas.

I welcome the Department’s commitment to removing all temporary traffic management as quickly as possible, while recognising that further progress will depend on weather conditions.

I will continue to engage with the Department to ensure this final phase is completed swiftly and safely, and that local people are kept fully informed as the works conclude.

📢 Cllr John McAuley Highlights Concerns Over a “Two-Tier System”

“There is a very real and growing concern in our community that a two-tier system is developing when it comes to the support being provided to asylum seekers compared with the support available to local people.

As I highlighted at the committee meeting, asylum seekers are being placed in hotels and receiving coordinated assistance, including access to education, healthcare, transport for legal appointments and daily contact from support teams. Meanwhile, many of our own residents—people who were born here and who are struggling with housing and other pressures—would be glad of a hotel room and that level of support.

My concern is not with the individuals involved, but with the fairness of the system. We need clarity on what legal obligations, if any, fall on councils, and we need that advice before making decisions that place additional burdens on local ratepayers or deepen the sense of inequality people are already feeling.

It is important that we address these issues openly and honestly, without fear of being labelled, and ensure that support for any group does not come at the expense of those who have been waiting longest for help.”
