πŸ‘πŸ’§ Are We Building Homes Faster Than We Can Supply Water? πŸ’§πŸ‘

Britain is buzzing with new housing developments, but have you ever wondered where all the water will come from? 🚰 As new homes pop up around towns like Banbury, the demand for drinking water, wastewater treatment, and drainage infrastructure skyrockets. While it's clear we need more homes for young people, families, and communities, the question of water supply is often overlooked.

Every new home adds to the water footprint, and while houses can be built in months, the necessary water infrastructure can take years or even decades to catch up. It's a simple question with complex implications for our future.

Dive into this important national debate with Water Matters and explore how we can balance housing needs with sustainable water solutions. πŸŒπŸ’¦

🌍 Refill, Not Landfill: Why Packaging Choices Matter 🌿

Ahead of World Refill Day on June 16, the Water Matters team visited Nothing But Footprints in Banbury to meet owner Dan Ludlow. Discover how a simple change in the way we shop can make a significant impact on our planet.

In 2018, fresh from travels abroad, we packed containers and visited our first refill shop, Zero Green in Bristol. Filling them with cereals, nuts, snacks, and cleaning products felt revolutionary. No unnecessary food waste, no excess packaging, and no pressure to buy more than needed. It was a small step with a big impact. However, with Bristol being a 160-mile round trip, frequent visits were challenging. We needed a closer option, and now, we have the largest refill shop in Oxfordshire, offering over 1,800 ethically sourced products.

So, what exactly is a refill shop? Imagine a supermarket without the packaging. Refill shops buy products in bulk and sell them without the waste. This simple shift in shopping habits can drastically reduce household waste and promote sustainability.

Join us in celebrating World Refill Day and explore how you can make a difference. Read more about our journey and the impact of refill shops in our latest article: https://vist.ly/57aw9

Not all environmental stories are doom and gloom. 😊

For years, water voles were disappearing from Britain's rivers and wetlands. Many people thought they might vanish from large parts of the country altogether.

Now they're coming back.

Alongside the return of beavers and the success of red kite reintroductions, the water vole is proof that conservation can work when people are prepared to give nature a helping hand.

It's a lovely reminder that sometimes the good guys do win.

Read our latest Water Matters article here:

Once Britain's fastest-declining mammal, the water vole seemed destined to disappear from our rivers and wetlands. Yet against the odds, this small creature is making a remarkable comeback, offering hope that nature can recover when people choose to give it a chance.

πŸ’¦ Another huge water main bursts. Bills go up. Water companies say they need more money for investment.

So where is all the money actually going?

Our latest Water Matters article digs into the numbers behind your water bill, looking at debt, dividends, infrastructure spending and why so many people are questioning whether they're getting value for money.

Using the recent Banbury "fountain" as a starting point, we follow the money and ask a question many customers are already asking:

If we're paying more than ever, why does it feel like we're getting less?

Water companies say higher bills are needed to fund the biggest investment programme in a generation. Yet as debt piles up, infrastructure failures make headlines and customers face rising costs, many are asking a simple question: where has all the money gone?

Britain is encouraging people to embrace the healing powers of wild swimming for wellbeing and recovery. But with pollution, regulatory failures, and public trust issues, swimmers face a public health gamble. 🏞️

Before taking the plunge, many swimmers now check apps for rainfall radar, sewage alerts, and river conditions. It's like planning a mini-military operation! Yet, the allure of cold-water swimming remains strong. It helps with grief, anxiety, burnout, and loneliness. Even GPs are recommending it for mental and physical health benefits. 🌿
