This is an original 1985 Meat Is Murder songbook, personally signed by Morrissey and Johnny Marr. It is particularly rare because it was one of only five signed copies offered as prizes by Smash Hits magazine in its 9–22 October 1985 issue. The original magazine confirms that five copies of the songbook were being given away and that all five were signed by Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
The songbook has been in the same owner’s possession since approximately late 1985/early 1986. As a teenager, he was working as an apprentice carpenter alongside a younger colleague named Nigel, who had won the songbook through the Smash Hits competition. Being a huge Smiths fan, he arranged a wonderfully 1980s teenage trade with Nigel: a pair of boxing boots in exchange for the signed songbook.
