Free bus travel for Barnsley youngsters is back in the spotlight after criticism that children “should be walking instead”.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has defended the policy after a member of the public questioned why money was being spent on free travel for young people, suggesting the funding should instead support free bus passes for people aged 60 and over.

For Barnsley, this is not a brand-new scheme. The Barnsley MiCard has allowed eligible 5 to 18-year-olds living in the borough to travel for free by bus since August 2025, as long as their journey starts or finishes in Barnsley.

Mr Coppard said the scheme is about easing the cost of living, helping young people get to school, college, training, jobs, sports clubs and social activities especially in rural areas where walking is not always realistic.

The debate also lands at a time when public transport in Barnsley is already under pressure, with town-centre bus disruption and wider questions about reliability, access and safety around key routes and the interchange.

The key question for Barnsley families is whether free travel is a cost-of-living lifeline or whether more support should also be targeted at older residents who rely on buses to stay independent.

💚 BARNSLEY ESSENTIALS GOOD NEWS STORY OF THE WEEK 💚 🌿👏 50 YEARS OF VOLUNTEERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT CARLTON MARSH

This week’s Barnsley Essentials Good News Story is a brilliant example of what local people can achieve.

Volunteers are celebrating an incredible 50 years of caring for Carlton Marsh Nature Reserve.

What began with just a handful of wildlife enthusiasts wanting to protect the site has grown into one of the area's important havens for nature, with more than 2,000 species recorded.

Over five decades, generations of volunteers have helped protect, maintain and improve the reserve giving wildlife a place to thrive and local people somewhere wonderful to enjoy.

Carlton Marsh has also gained Green Flag recognition and success in Yorkshire in Bloom.

👏 Fifty years of volunteering, community spirit and looking after the place we call home.

That definitely deserves celebrating.
