The outdoor cinema screen is ready to roll out for the Surf + Conservation festival in Croyde on August 15th and 16th.

Overlooking the sea from the amazing Freshwell camping site we will be showing two nights of film.

Friday night: The North Devon stop on the Save The Waves Film Festival world tour. An evening of superb surf/ocean based short films supporting conservation efforts to protect surf ecosystems across the globe. Screen time approximately 8.30pm, dependent on sunset lighting), £5 tickets.

Saturday night: Edinburgh Conservation Film Festival shorts celebrating conservation (including Safeguarding Our Seas: lessons From Lundy by North Devon Moving Image). Screen time approximately 8.30pm, dependent on sunset lighting), £5 tickets.

Excited to share some images from Caerphilly Castle, near Cardiff, which reopened its doors to the public in July! BlackbeamCinematic has been involved in the ambitious project to refurbish sections of Wales' biggest castle.

We have been installing projection, audio and lighting systems to help tell Caerphilly's stories and bring the characters of its past to life for a modern visitor audience.

Working with creators from the brilliant Creative Studios, the story of the castle is narrated using projections which use the surfaces of the building and custom built installations.

The centrepiece is the Great Hall, dating back to the 14th century, with the story of the castle unfolding around the walls and focusing on a projection surface emulating a medieval tapestry.

It's been a pleasure to work on this project, led by CADW.

If the walls could talk! With projection mapping they literally can!

We walk past historic buildings all the time, often oblivious to the significant role they once played. BlackbeamCinematic loves projects where we can use projections to bring history alive for a wider audience!

This is a throwback to 2023 when we helped to bring the history pages to life for the Exeter Harbour Festival at the Exeter Quay, telling the story of the quayside and the custom house.

Believed to be the oldest stone building in the city, The Custom House cost a whopping £3000 in 1680 (over half a million quid in today's cash). It closed in 1989 after 300 years of use by the Custom and Excise Service.

Behind the scenes at Blackbeam: Prop making

From concept to conception, the prop making process is one of trial, error and many patient hours! BlackbeamCinematic builds most of the props we use for events and immersive experiences.

The peacocks which adorned the arches at the start and end of the recent North Devon Hospice Nightwalk, began life as a concept sketch, one big polystyrene block and some visual references.

Throw into the mix an electric bread knife, some hot wire, a hot gun and 1000 coloured feathers, some trial, some error and the patience of a saint (shout out to Kaz!) and gradually two beautiful peacocks emerge...

We are firm believers in developing skills and fostering creative talent in North Devon. This is Lauren, who is studying a T-Level in Design and Development at Petroc Official. She has been on placement with us since the new year.

Think work experience translates as making cups of tea and doing some filing? Not at Blackbeam! We've been putting Lauren through her paces, learning Touch Designer to develop ideas for projection mapping artworks.

Experimentation is all part of the process of developing big projections - hence she has her own R+D corner at BlackbeamCinematic HQ, trying ideas out to see how they work on different contours and surfaces.

Today it's the side of a model VW bus - won't be long before taking the step up!... 😉

"We would really love to make a statement on Barnstaple bridge" the North Devon Hospice Nightwalk team said.

"How about we light it up with pink neon?" BlackbeamCinematic replied.

"Yes. That would work!..."

1 bridge + 400 metres of pink neon light = 1000+ illuminated Nightwalk participants!

Well done to all the nightwalkers, hospice staff and volunteers who made such a massive statement on Saturday night. It was a perfect event from start to finish and thanks for letting us be a part of it! 🤩
