You’ve probably heard of the popular phrase, ‘Trust is earned, not given’, but...

This is why that isn’t true, and in fact, it’s instead an active choice to GIVE trust!

✨ The word earned implies that everyone keeps a tally, where we tot up points against everything/everyone that we might want to trust. But there’s no benchmark for this, it’s not numerical or measurable (well for most people anyway), it’s really based on FEELINGS. The feeling that we want to GIVE trust.

✨ The choice is ultimately ours. It’s our trust to give. Not someone else’s. If someone betrays out trust it’s not down to them to tick all of the boxes to get it back, it’s down to US to GIVE it, when we feel we want to! Sometimes they might tick the boxes, but we still don’t FEEL we can give trust, on whatever level.

✨ Everyone has different levels of trust. When we think about it in marketing terms it’s idiotic to think that ticking boxes (that we create) will lead to customers wanting to spend money with us (but we earned it!). In reality we need to know our dream customer and ask ourselves ‘what would increase the chance of this person choosing to give me their trust?’.

And finally, it’s important to remember that trust, however you go about it, can take time. It’s lost a lot faster than it’s gained, and that’s why being an ethical business that has customer trust as of one the brand pillars is so important.

A great blog post by Social Media Today with Bluehost, sharing an infographic around how small businesses have been impacted by Covid-19.

Amazing to hear that 27% of people have turned a passion into a business during Covid-19.

Important that it rightly highlights that there's a bigger need for digital marketing and online sales streams, including:

Social Media Presence
Email data
Online marketing strategy
A website that engages and converts customers

I don’t know who needs to see this, but, YOU CAN DO THIS! 💪🏼

One thing had to work on is the mindset of ‘there’s room for everyone who has passion, creates value and keeps going when things are sh*t.’

Just because there’s Coca-Cola it doesn’t mean no one drinks Pepsi. Just because there’s Prada, it doesn’t mean people don’t buy Gucci.

Bring VALUE to your customers. Create an HONEST business that people trust. ADAPT your business to changing seasons and technology.

Have a great week!

Do you know how to pick influencers to work with?

It’s more than just about followers, or perceived reach, which unfortunately lots of business still fall into the trap of and then wonder why their influencer campaigns crash and burn.

And while number of followers alone will still often play a part in how much people charge, there are other things you REALLY need to consider to run a successful influencer campaign.

✨ Their engagement rate
✨ Their follower demographic
✨ Other brands they’ve worked with
✨ The style of content they create
✨ Their most successful content - the stuff their followers WANT to know about
✨ What company they keep
✨ What platforms their on (& successful on)

As you can imagine, trying to work out all of this, and more, can be a minefield for many small businesses...and that’s why people like me exists 💁🏻‍♀️

Fancy a sausage roll?

I usually hate postal ads! They’re usually old fashioned, boring and covered in offers. So you can imagine the delight on my face when this (rather large) sausage roll slid through my letter box... (why does that sound dirty?)

Why does it work?
💥 Its beautifully simple. It’s not overly designed BUT it really catches your attention. Less is certainly more!

💥 It sparks your senses. When you see it you remember the last time you had a sausage roll (for me the Vegan ones from Greg’s are just amazing!). You can imagine the taste, the smell, the feel of the pastry. This then drives desire. You IMAGINE yourself with one.

💥 Timing. COVID is back on the rise (😭), and winter is coming, it’s the perfect time for an ‘order-to-your-door’ home comfort. Coincidence? I think not!

💥 It’s not covered in copy. I don’t want to read an essay about Greggs, or sausage rolls, I just want to know a) that it’s available b) how much it is. Simple! Choose 1 or 2 key messages and make them as clear as possible.

Which personality are you? ⬆️🖊

Comment and let me know!

Honestly, depending on your audience and the message you’re getting across, it’s great to be any of these.

In fact, you might be a few, or different writing personalities depending on what you’re posting, and that’s great!

Just remember, whatever you write, write with a consistent brand tone of voice, and PERSONALITY! 🖤

How long do you have to capture your audience’s attention on social media? ⏰

Well, studies have shown the attention span of a human has now dropped to 8 seconds, on average!

I’d say you have more like 2-5 SECONDS on the likes of Instagram and Facebook because of the endless scrolling and automatic action of doing this.

That means what you share HAS to quickly capture the attention of your dream customers!

It’s quite UNFAIR really when you think about the time and effort we put into our content 😭

But, there’s a reason video stats on Instagram & Facebook are driven by ‘3-second views’. That’s really not a long time! For most people it’s their boring, over-branded intro!

What can you do?
💥 Clear, well-designed, eye-catching graphics!
💥 High quality, inspiring photography that makes your audience think ‘ooo what’s this about?’ or ‘I like that, what is it/where’s it from?’.
💥 Video content. Videos naturally grab people’s attention more than images - duh they’re moving!
💥 A great caption - or the first sentence at least! (I’ll share more about how to write great captions in another post!)
💥 Consistently posting and growing engagement so you appear higher up your audiences feed.
💥 Consistency & personality when it comes to design, colours (this doesn’t mean being overly ‘themey’) and fonts, so you’re audience can spot your content in their feed, as they’re scrolling.

How do you grab your audiences attention? Are there things you could be doing better?

Let’s check in with ourselves! 🧠

I’ve always thought that being someone who works in social media and has a business advocating others to use it for their business/personal portfolios, that I’ve also got a responsibility to also make people aware of how social media can affect our mental health.

It’s like selling fast food, or sweets 🍬 It can be really good, but if you don’t check in with yourself, take good care of yourself and ultimately, limit usage to some degree, it can begin to affect you.

I know this first hand. The way I’ve had to change my mindset over the last few years has been crazy (not just because of social media) and to be honest, it’s STILL something I struggle with not, especially when it comes to switching off!

A few of my top tips!
✨ Learn about yourself. Honestly, diving deep and learning what makes me tick, especially when it comes to seeing certain things on social media, has really helped me catch it before it affects me.
✨ Have switch off time! Whether it’s before bed, in the bath, while watching a film.
✨ Remind yourself there’s a real world out there, with real people who have real feelings. Not over-edited, avatars filled with confidence 100% of the time!

What are your top tips for staying calm and caring for your mental health?

On a serious note...

Why social media is such an important tool to support social causes 💖

Recently, I’ve seen quite a few amazing , talented women who I’ve met and followed at a similar point in our business journeys, post very important stories around two men (who, I have to say I haven’t had too many dealings with, but have experienced on a smaller level) who have been taking advantage of them and causing a lot of fu***ng distress, in a time which should be an exciting point of business and personal growth.

It’s amazing to see these women speak out, and I’m happy to support them, but one thing these events cement in my mind is how social media is such an important tool nowadays in helping share awareness of serious issues.

It’s ability to amplify an important message, provide a community of support and help people not feel alone is SO important. All of this in a matter of days, or HOURS!

It’s also easy to tell when people are feeling guilty, or ‘seen’; radio silence, private accounts and social media ‘breaks’.

I’m the tiniest part of this, but if anyone wants to talk or needs support to amplify their message, my DM’s are always open.

Love to my little community 🖤 Let’s always stay honest, create to help people and be able see clearly cut through the bu****it!

Drop a 🔥 in the comments if after overcoming that hard task or challenge (or even if you didn’t) you realised you’d learnt something invaluable!

Honestly, I can say with no doubt that the most important things I’ve ever learnt, with our without the help of others, came from a challenge or something I thought at the time was ‘hopeless’ or ‘impossible’.

The next time you get stuck or you’re finding something challenging, ask yourself, ‘what will this teach me?’.

Have you been watching on Netflix? 🇫🇷

An American Social Media Exec moves to Paris to pursue a dream job at a Marketing Firm. Sounds like a dream!

If you haven’t seen it, and don’t want any spoilers, don’t read any further! 🙈

I thought I’d pick out some good, bad and damn right ugly observations from binge watching season 1.

THE GOOD!
✨ If self confidence could be sold, Emily would be rich beyond her wildest dreams. We all need a slice of Emily’s confidence!
✨ Her ideas when it comes to immersive social media campaigns are quite nice and she makes a great point about brands working with influencers who are just interested in ‘swag bags’ and their own egos! You need to choose influencers who will love your brand (almost) as much as you do!
✨ Girls got passion. It’s so important and really reflects in your ideas and content you create.

THE BAD!
💥 I’m sorry, I find Emily a super unlikeable character. Maybe she was written that way, she comes across as self-important (constantly), inconsiderate and quite frankly, annoying!
💥 Baring in mind she’s an exec/junior role, there’s a lot more to the job than just going to nice events, coming up with wacky (expensive) ideas and taking selfies. In reality it’s a lot of customer service, planning and analytics.
💥 The way she speaks to clients and celebrity influencers...dear lord!
💥 The fact she seemingly has total free reign of the big luxury accounts. I’ve never known this to happen.

THE UGLY
🌪 Let’s not talk about the way she chases down clients who aren’t interested, follows them to the ballet and basically yells at them.
🌪 She makes a pretty bad habit out of taking pictures of strangers for her own personal Insta, without asking permission. This is a BIG no no, especially when you’re adding sarcastic remarks and mocking them! Please never do this.
🌪 I’ve seen a few posts moaning that she can’t be a good social media manager if she has barely any followers on her personal account. This is totally BS! Most social media managers are way too busy running successful brand/client accounts to worry about their own! Hats off if you do though!

Did you know Instagram is now 10 YEARS OLD? 🎂 🎈

Scroll through to see my top 5 favourite feature launches & let me know what you’d love to launch on Insta in 2021!

I still remember the day it launched, I don’t remember it being so much of a ‘bang’ but a rising hype with people sharing everything and anything they could take a picture of.

Low quality images (as phones didn’t have amazing cameras back in 2010) and a feed of our friends and family member.

What a difference 10 years has made. And while it has its negative sides, mental health etc. that we all need to be aware of, it’s helped so many people connect, to find a community, to be creative, to build brands and to share much needed information.

Without a doubt, the next 10 years will be HUGE!
