You’ve probably heard of the popular phrase, ‘Trust is earned, not given’, but...
This is why that isn’t true, and in fact, it’s instead an active choice to GIVE trust!
✨ The word earned implies that everyone keeps a tally, where we tot up points against everything/everyone that we might want to trust. But there’s no benchmark for this, it’s not numerical or measurable (well for most people anyway), it’s really based on FEELINGS. The feeling that we want to GIVE trust.
✨ The choice is ultimately ours. It’s our trust to give. Not someone else’s. If someone betrays out trust it’s not down to them to tick all of the boxes to get it back, it’s down to US to GIVE it, when we feel we want to! Sometimes they might tick the boxes, but we still don’t FEEL we can give trust, on whatever level.
✨ Everyone has different levels of trust. When we think about it in marketing terms it’s idiotic to think that ticking boxes (that we create) will lead to customers wanting to spend money with us (but we earned it!). In reality we need to know our dream customer and ask ourselves ‘what would increase the chance of this person choosing to give me their trust?’.
And finally, it’s important to remember that trust, however you go about it, can take time. It’s lost a lot faster than it’s gained, and that’s why being an ethical business that has customer trust as of one the brand pillars is so important.
