Statement from the Bath MP on ID cards as planned by the Government for the right to work to cut down on illegal workers:
“This is not the kind of country we want to become - one where the government can force people to carry a digital identity just to earn a living.
“These plans are invasive, unnecessary, and fundamentally illiberal. People shouldn’t be turned into criminals just because they can’t have a digital ID, or choose not to. This will be especially worrying for millions of older people, people living in poverty and disabled people who are more likely to be digitally excluded.
“We Liberal Democrats have always stood up to defend civil liberties against government overreach. We will fight tooth and nail to oppose these plans too. People shouldn’t have to surrender their privacy to go to work.”
