From Bath Rugby:
Last week, Bath Rugby players including Cameron Redpath and Jaco Coetzee took time out from preparing for their busy festive fixture list to visit the RUH Bath children’s ward, and meet with patients, their families and staff to sprinkle a little festive magic.
The players posed for photographs with children and young people and took time to play and to hand out to gifts to the brave young patients and match tickets for the incredible ward staff.
They met children of all ages, from a young baby born the day they became Premiership Champions through to budding players who shared some passes with a team rugby ball before it was signed for them. During the visit they also made time for games with some of the young inpatients.
They shared about the experience: “Such a special visit to see the brave patients, families and incredible staff. This place is full of heroes”. Jaco added “I’m really glad that we decided to do this; to come in and try and make everyone’s day a bit more special this Christmas.”
The players took as much away from the visit as the patients and staff did as Cameron added that “I’ve met the happiest smiley little girl that I’ve seen in a long time. She’s only 2 and was quite shy at first but ended up high fiving and playing with her new toys with my teammates.”
This Christmas, RUHX, the RUH Bath official NHS charity, are fundraising to help the Children’s Ward manage children’s mental health issues by helping create a new sanctuary for our young patients. A new calm, quiet De-Escalation room that will include soft furnishings, low-stimulation lighting, and sensory-friendly features. A place where they can feel safe when everything around them feels too loud, too scary, and out of their control. To make this happen RUHX are aiming to raise £50,000 this Christmas. So that this new space can be ready in Spring 2026 and every child at the RUH can feel safe, supported, and cared for when they need it most.
