Happy !

Starting my small business and working freelance has provided me with many opportunities to develop and showcase my skills which I have either displayed in a portfolio to employers or developed as long standing freelance work.

However, I have learned a few important lessons since going freelance which I thought would be worth sharing.

I made this mistake early on and wasn't clear what my services were. Ultimately, I turned my hand to anything a client requested because I wanted the work but I didn't feel as fulfilled.

I think every freelancer struggles with pricing their services. However, I let myself be lead by what the client was willing to pay rather than sticking to my fixed prices. Remember, you need to take into account business costs, pension, and annual leave that you would normally be paid and don't be afraid to ask for a pay rise!

Be realistic about how long a task will take considering preparation and research time and communicate this clearly with your client. I fell into the trap of committing myself to a large workload that I couldn't fit into my schedule to keep the client happy.

Freelancing and working for yourself can be lonely at times and I've found reaching out to people on social media, attending networking events, and having a business mentor helpful to build a support network.

Read on for another podcast recommendation! ๐ŸŽง

As much as I love to listen to writers talk about their work and their writing process, I also love to engage with their other passions whether that's their tv recommendations, relationship advice or travel tips.

So here are my favourite podcasts created by writers (that aren't about writing.)

~The Missing with Pandora Sykes ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ
Journalist Pandora Sykes presents the podcast which highlights the long-term missing who have never been traced. Each episode tells the story of a missing person, giving the listener clues to help solve the mystery. Ultimately, the podcast aims to generate new leads to help solve these missing person cases.

~The Travel Diaries with Holly Rubenstein ๐ŸŒ
This weekly podcast is hosted by travel journalist, Holly Rubenstein and features a new guest each episode who reveals their favourite travel memories and defining moments.

~ Sentimental in the City with Dolly Alderton & Caroline O'Donoghue ๐Ÿ—ฝ
You may recognise Caroline O'Donoghue's podcast Sentimental Garbage, her most recent mini series is co-hosted by writer Dolly Alderton where they discuss each series of S*x And The City.

~ Daisy is Insatiable with Daisy Buchanan ๐Ÿ’•
Hosted by Daisy Buchanan the podcast features a new guest each episode where they bare all in a conversation about love, s*x and relationships.

If you had a podcast, what would you talk about? ๐ŸŽ™

My top tips for brainstorming content ideas๐Ÿ’ก

Here are my top strategies to help avoid a creative block when creating your content plan. ๐Ÿ—“

1. Review your top performing posts or content.๐Ÿ†

Once you identify what your most successful content is, you can brainstorm ideas for how to replicate that success. You can also review what content wasn't successful and avoid similar posts in the future.

2. Build a swipe file. ๐Ÿ“

A swipe file is a digital folder where you keep a range of excellent examples of marketing material from your competitors or a business you admire. Think of it as an inspirational scrapbook or moodboard which you can refer to when you're stuck for ideas.

3. Keep a record of all of your ideas. ๐Ÿ“

You never know when inspiration is going to strike so have a key document where you keep note of any content ideas. Plus, if youโ€™re looking for fresh inspiration, reading over your old ideas is a great way to start thinking creatively. Use a trello board to track when a idea turns into a post.

4. Research the topics your audience cares about. ๐Ÿ“–

Spend some time studying your target audience by reading the publications they are reading and note any common themes and topics. Then build your own ideas into these trends.

Comment below any of your content brainstorming techniques.

5 creative ideas you can do on your break to help improve writer's block. ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

We've all been there when you realise you've been staring at a blank screen for hours and the words are yet to flow. This is when it's best to take a break away from your computer and refresh your mind.

Here are my top 5 ideas to try on your break to help renew your energy levels.

1. Go for a walk

This is my favourite activity to do on my break and I've been walking more than ever this past year. This week is and the theme is nature, check out the video above created with snaps I've taken on my daily walks.

2. Meditate

Close off from the daily stresses and distractions and take 5 minutes for yourself to concentrate on your breathing and being mindful. Try taking your meditation session outside to get some fresh air.

3. 20 minute power nap

Did you know 20 minutes is the ultimate time for a nap? It's just enough time to refresh your energy levels without feeling groggy. Sometimes you just need to catch up on those zzz.

4. Read a book

Enjoy some time away from your screen by taking some inspiration from your favourite writers, you might even get some ideas for your writing.

5. Work on a craft project

Whether it's colouring, embroidery or scrapbooking, having a craft project on the go you can dip in and out of is great for mindfulness.

My Writing Journey โœ

My writing journey started as a child where I spent most of my time writing stories or with my nose in a book. I made various writing projects for school, Brownies or just for fun (with some dubious illustrations) including the next installment to the Harry Potter series aged 11. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿง™๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I went on to study English Literature at A Level where I really enjoyed reading the classics and studying Shakespeare which contemplated my Drama studies. I enjoyed it so much I studied a Creative Writing and Drama degree where I loved writing my own work. During university, I learnt about other aspects of writing like Children's fiction, spoken word, blogging and magazine writing. I even saw my own script come to life in a student production. ๐ŸŽฌ

In September, I decided to further my writing journey and start a Masters degree in Journalism to help me pursue a career in writing. Not only do we write articles for print and online on the course but we are finessing our skills in front of the camera (pictured.) ๐Ÿ“บ

My passion for writing pushed me to start Wizzie Social where I create creative copy for small businesses. I love being able to tell the story of a brand in an engaging way and reach new audiences. ๐Ÿ“

Let me know in the comments if you enjoy writing as well, whether that is for work or just for fun.

Is anyone working on the next best seller? ๐Ÿ“š

My Top Tips for Writing Social Media Captionsย ๐Ÿ“

Writing captions on social media can be a bit of a mind field when you're trying to promote your business. You might have lots of content ideas but you struggle to put them into words or you're worried about coming across as too salesy. Here are my top tips.

~ Research your target clients and make your posts relevant to them.

Create a profile of your ideal client including their age, gender and lifestyle and think about what they like to engage with on social media.

~ Develop your brand voice by including your personality and your story in your writing.

Your audience are more likely to engage with your content once they get to know the person behind the account. Make sure your captions still sound like you wrote them and include information about you and your business journey.

~ Keep your captions short and punchy.

Most people scan on a small screen when scrolling through social media so it's important to keep your writing clear and concise. Use short sentences and split your writing into bullet points or short paragraphs.

~ Use active rather than passive voice.

This will make your writing more direct and straightforward.

~ Keep your writing positive.

It's important to showcase the realities of running a business (both the good and the bad) and shine a light on causes you care about but avoid engaging with social media trolling or criticising other users.

~ Avoid pushy, overly sales-driven messaging.

Instead provide valuable and useful content with your audience in mind which showcases your knowledge and skills.

~ Include a call to action.

Close your caption with a sentence that suggests your audience to take further action. You could ask a question they can answer in the comments or direct them to your website.

If you would like further tailored support in social media writing for your business, you can book in for a free discovery call with me. Just send me a DM. ๐Ÿ’Œ

My Blog Writing Process โœ

An idea for a blog post will be provided by the client either as a short prompt or a more well developed idea.

I conduct some research into the blog post topic to get some background context. ๐Ÿค“

I decide on the style of the blog post either a listicle, long form, informative or conversational. This will dictate the word count of the article.

I create a skeleton structure for the post using bullet points and adding the information from my research.

Once the draft version is complete, I add links to outside website, links to related blog posts on the client's website and a catchy title.

I always bare in mind SEO when writing a blog post and include key search words to help improve the article's ranking on Google.

I send the draft to the client via Google Docs so they can send any feedback or suggest any revisions. ๐Ÿ—’

Then it's complete and ready for the client to upload to their website. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The Top 5 Apps To Help Improve Your Writing ๐Ÿ“– ๐Ÿ–‹

This is a great app if you're looking for the motivation to start your writing journey or find your groove again. The app encourages you to write 750 words (3 pages) every day. You can write about anything and everything as it's all kept completely private so it's great for a brain dump.

So you've started writing 750 words a day but you're struggling to find inspiration for what to write about, this is where Daily Page comes in. The app will email you a different writing prompt each day which get more engaging as the days go on.

This app is great for fine tuning your writing as it highlights lengthy, complex sentences and common errors. If you never got your head around passive voice, the app will help with that too.

This feature is great for when you're writing in mid flow and then your mind suddenly turns blank and you can't think of the word. The app allows you to type your idea into the search bar and a list of words/phrases is generated with similar concepts.

Grammarly is my go to app to edit my writing once it's in the final stages. It will spot any grammatical errors and is more thorough than the Microsoft spell checker.

Have you considered writing a blog for your business but you're not sure whether it's worth your time?

Here are just some of the benefits

Blogging is a great way to connect with your existing and potential customers in a more conversational way whilst sharing valuable content. Make sure to enable comments as this is a great way to interact with your audience.

No matter the size of your business, blogging is a great way for your business to build trust and establish clout in your industry. Make sure to publish informative posts to show how knowledgeable you are you in your field. Before you know it, your blog will become a go to resource for those in your industry.

Blogging allows you to show the personal side of your business to your audience. Use your posts to showcase your business values and the personality of your company.

An advantage blogging has over Instagram is your audience can easily share your post. Your visitors can share the direct link to your blog or email it to a friend so you can reach a bigger audience.

Search engines love fresh, relevant content so consistently updating your blog will increase your website's ranking. Blogging is also a great opportunity to get your keywords on to your website in a natural way.

Another benefit of blogging over social media marketing, is that blog posts have a much longer life span and when utilised correctly will continue to drive traffic to your website months or even years after they are published.

Happy International Womens Day!

This year's theme for is to .

This year, I choose to challenge the gender pay gap. Did you know that in the UK nine out of ten women work for a company that pays them less than their male counterparts? In nine out of seventeen sectors in the UK economy, men earn 10% or more on average than women.

This comes after the recent news that the Government will raise NHS nurses' wages by only 1%, an industry vastly made up of women.

I've recently been recommended the book 'Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men' by Caroline Criado-Perez as a great place to start educating myself on similar matters.

What do you ?

I have new business cards ๐Ÿ™Œ

My original business card design has had a little update and now includes a QR code which you can scan and go straight to my website.

I wanted to add this since QR codes have become more prominant now (and we now all know what they are!)

They come with three unique back designs as I couldn't pick so you can collect all three if you really want. ๐Ÿ˜†

I'm looking forward to future events where I can finally hand these out.

Let me know which design is your favourite.
