A campaign has started in Bath to encourage businesses to keep their doors closed to save energy. B&NES Council is supporting the drive for a behaviour change by shops, restaurants and cafés, asking them to keep their doors closed during the working day. This simple act can lower energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions and cut fuel bills. A shut door can also help provide healthier working conditions for staff and cut down on shoplifting. Interestingly, studies have shown that closing the door doesn’t have a detrimental effect on profits and many major retailers and coffee chains have adopted a closed-door policy in recent years. Plus, the dramatic rise in climate conscientiousness means that consumers these days are much more appreciative of good environmental practices and will support participating retailers.
A team will be visiting shops and cafés in Bath, Keynsham and Radstock over the next few weeks to encourage them to shut the door. Stickers for doors or windows will be supplied free of charge, allowing customers to easily recognize and support participating retailers.
