Since Pale Wizard began in 2017 with the debut single from Phoxjaw, we’ve become known for releasing heavy rock, psychedelia, doom, and stoner metal. But from the start, it’s never been about genre—it’s been about passion. When a special record comes along, we can’t help but get behind it.
We’ve known Alf Hale for many years, and his music has a way of staying with you. Every lyric, every chord carries his lived experience. I have often sung backing vocals on Alf’s albums, and this new record just feels different—more personal, more confident, more deeply moving. Alf has reached a place where he makes music for no one but himself, and that honesty shines through.
That’s exactly what Pale Wizard is about. We’ve never chased trends or quick returns. Projects like our '50 Years Later' series prove that—it costs a fortune to make, license, and produce those records, but we do it because music deserves to exist in the world, regardless of profit. Back in 2017, we saw something in Phoxjaw and wanted to give them a push. They went on to play major festivals and sign a big deal—but for us, it was always about believing in the music.
Pale Wizard has never been a business in the traditional sense. If we break even, that'll do. For Tim and me, this is about joy—the joy of turning songs into records, of creating something lasting, of putting art into the world.
So yes—we love Alf’s new album. Will it sell loads? Probably not. But it deserves to be heard. It’s not heavy, it’s not psych, it’s unlike anything else we’ve released. It’s honest, beautiful, and essential.
Do yourself a favour: spend some time with Alf’s back catalogue. We think you’ll hear what we hear.
