It might not look like much to walk past, but this Bath building's new purpose has been 10 years in the making and could make a “real difference” to policing in the city.

The brand new Bath Police Station opened its doors on Monmouth Street just last week. Described as a “modern, fit-for-purpose police station,” it means Bath's police officers are working together under the same roof for the first time in more than ten years.

Bath and North East Somerset Superintendent Ronnie Lungu said this would make a “real difference”. He said: “From tackling antisocial behaviour and shoplifting to responding to wider city centre demand, having our teams working together from a central base will help us provide a more coordinated and effective response to the issues that matter to our communities.”

Bath’s last full police station closed in 2015, when the building on Manvers Street was sold to the University of Bath for £7m. At the time, Avon and Somerset Police was trying to save money by closing police stations across Bath and Bristol.

Some police staff moved across the street, setting up an enquiry desk inside Bath and North East Somerset Council’s one stop shop in Lewis House. Patrol teams, however, were moved out to a site on the Lower Bristol Road. Police officers taking suspects into custody had already been told that they would need to take them to Keynsham instead.

A one stop shop including an enquiry desk was rebranded with signage naming it 'Bath Police Station' but there were still calls for the return of a 'proper' station, which has finally become a reality once more.
