Just months after tightening its lease extension policy, Motability has announced a new 9 or 15-month lease extension option for some car customers whose leases are due to end.

Motability has confirmed a series of significant changes to the Scheme from 1 July 2026, following government tax changes announced in November 2025 and rising costs. Below, we answer the key questions customers are asking and explain what the changes are likely to mean in practice.

🚗 Disabled drivers in rural areas fear they could lose their independence under the Scheme's mileage changes coming into effect for most customers on 1 July.

Speaking to BBC Scotland News, one Motability customer said he could face around £7,500 in excess mileage charges over a three-year lease if he continued driving the same number of miles.

"If it stays at 10,000 miles, then there's no decision at all," he said.

"It would be daft for me to continue with Motability."

Announcement for customers in Scotland.

While the July 2026 Motability changes are going ahead elsewhere in the UK, Scottish customers on the Accessible Vehicles and Equipment Scheme (AVES) ordering after 1 July 2026 will continue to receive:

🔹 20,000 miles per year (instead of 10,000)
🔹 Excess mileage charged at 5p per mile (instead of 25p)
🔹 More tyre replacements included
🔹 No charge for taking a vehicle abroad

Discussions are ongoing, but for now Scotland remains on the previous package while the rest of the UK moves to the new rules.

The continuation of these benefits is being funded through a one-off discretionary grant from the Motability Foundation.
