OFFICIAL account for the UK's National Film and Television School
Twitter & Instagram | The NFTS is a registered charity (313429).
The NFTS is one of the world's leading film, games and television schools. It is widely recognised as one of the top films schools in the world. In 1967, the government recommended the creation of a national film school for the UK and in 1971 the National Film School opened its doors for the first time focussing on postgraduate education. In the 1980s, the school officially changed its name to the
National Film and Television School to incorporate the demand for courses in television production and has since added games to its remit. NFTS prides itself on producing world-class, award-winning industry leaders. NFTS students and graduates also regularly win BAFTAs and won the short animation category for five years in a row. Other prestigious accolades include the Grierson Award for Best Student Documentary, as well as multiple Royal Television Society student awards and Annecy Animation Awards. NFTS graduates have gone on to win 13 Oscars and 145 BAFTAs with alumni including cinematographer, Sir Roger Deakins, BAFTA winning director, David Yates (best known for directing the Harry Potter films); Oscar winning animator Nick Park (creator of Wallace & Gromit) and Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli among others. Last night, National Film & Television School students sat down to watch an exclusive screening of thought-provoking psychological thriller, The Man in My Basement, starring Corey Hawkins and Willem Dafoe.
The film was followed by a brilliant Masterclass with writer-director Nadia Latif and NFTS graduates, producer Len Rowles and DoP Ula Pontikos. Huge thanks to them all for their time and to Andscape for the screening.

Recently National Film and Television School Business students launched their Creative Leadership module with an inspiring workshop from Emma Hardie at Aardman.
Emma shared how Aardman have built their amazingly creative sustainable studio by staying true to their values while reaching audiences across film, TV, games, live experiences, publishing and brand partnerships. From Wallace & Gromit (first created by Nick Park at NFTS) to Shaun the Sheep, their approach shows how content-led, fan-led and franchise-led strategies can build entire worlds around beloved characters and stories.
The challenge for our students now? To identify IP and design their own plan for building a franchise — balancing creativity with sustainability, and imagination with commercial reality.
At NFTS we believe that values and storytelling sit at the heart of good business. That’s why our Business of Film, TV & Games and wider business programmes are designed to give students the tools, confidence and inspiration to turn ideas into lasting enterprises.

The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is one of the world's leading film, television and games schools. In 2019 for the ninth consecutive year, The Hollywood Reporter named the NFTS as one of the world’s top film schools, the only UK film school to be included. In 2018 the NFTS received the BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema.
The NFTS runs more than 34 MA, Diploma and Certificate courses - as well as numerous short courses. We have more behind the camera courses than any other film school, including core craft areas such as directing and cinematography as well as specialist areas such as script supervision and production accounting.
NFTS alumni have gone on to win 13 Oscars and 145 BAFTAs with graduates including; Oscar winning cinematographer Roger Deakins (1917), Laurie Nunn, creator of global Netflix hit S*x Education, award winning writer/director Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir), award winning writer/director Shola Amoo (The Last Tree), BAFTA winning director, David Yates (Harry Potter), BAFTA winning director, Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here), Oscar winning animator Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit) and Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli.
First established in 1971 and due to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2021, the NFTS has evolved to become a leading global institution, developing some of Britain and the world’s top creative talent. The School recently released the findings of their Graduate Impact Report which demonstrated how NFTS graduates quickly take centre stage in an industry critical to the UK economy:
· 97% of the biggest budget ‘inward investment’ films have NFTS graduate involvement
· The School has a graduate employment rate of 93%
· Even though the NFTS graduates just 8 Cinematographers per year, alumni shoot 25% of all high end TV in the UK
· 1 in 4 recent graduates are BAME versus only 3% in the industry overall
· Two thirds of all UK high end television spend is on content with at least 1 NFTS graduate in a key role
· Over 50%of the biggest box office successes since 2015 have had at least 1 NFTS graduate in a key role
· NFTS graduates go on to become key creative leaders for much of the UK’s largest and most high profile film and television content
· 85% of UK broadcaster spend on high end television and two thirds of all Netflix productions have at least 1 NFTS graduate in a key role
· NFTS graduates achieve success within a short window of time and go on to become dominant in a specific field
· Investment in skills at the NFTS can pay dividends within just 18 months. Similar investment targeted at new entrants can take between five to ten years to pay off.
