Spanish classes are coming to Norwich! 🇪🇸

I’m so excited to finally be bringing SJ Languages to Norwich this September!

After building an amazing community of over 50 adult Spanish learners in Beccles, I’m opening my first Norwich group at The George Hotel Norwich 😊

If you’ve been saying “I really should learn Spanish” for years, or you love going to Spain but wish you felt more confident actually speaking Spanish when you’re there, this is for you.

My classes are relaxed, friendly and focused on Spanish you’ll actually use.

Think ordering food and drinks, chatting about yourself, asking questions and actually understanding what comes back!

Lots of speaking, no sitting silently working through a textbook, and you can even grab a drink from the bar while you learn 🍷

I may have found the best way to get loads of birthday messages 🤣🎂🇪🇸

Day 1 of my Summer Challenge just happened to be… wish me a happy birthday in Spanish 😂

My Beccles classes are having a little break from our weekly classes over the Summer and for some of them it just felt way too long without using their Spanish.

So i made them a 21 day challenge.

Just 5 minutes a day. Nothing massive. No pressure to do every single one either.

Adapted and suitable for my learners at any level.

Some have only just finished a 12 week Beginners course with me and others have been learning with me much longer! (12-18 months!)

But the idea is that everyone can join in at their level.

Plus with all the text messages and voice notes there’s plenty of extra reading and listening practice too for everyone.

I am loving opening WhatsApp everyday and seeing Spanish everywhere. And love receiving all the notifications.

All the lovely birthday messages were great but what makes me really happy is seeing people using their Spanish, even if it is at times clunky and not perfect (that’s how progress is made!!) but not worrying and getting involved 🫶

No two Spanish lessons ever seem to go in the same direction 😂

My teaching days look a little different over the summer but there’s still plenty going on!

One minute I’m chatting with an A level student about expats in Spain, integration and education, then somehow we’re talking about my own school days in Tenerife and what it was like for me and my family (we all had different experiences) to learn and work in a different language.

Then I’m on an online Zoom lesson and a WhatsApp video call with my adult learners chatting about friends visiting, daily routines, weekend plans, pets, birthdays and whatever else comes up 😂

Basically normal every day life, just in Spanish.

And while my Beccles classes are having a summer break, the community has definitely not gone quiet.

Our Summer Spanish Challenge WhatsApp group is on fire right now! 🔥🔥🔥

Daily messages and voice notes (💃💃 I’m doing a happy dance with every message as I know what courage it takes to speak in Spanish and send voice notes within the community but also you only get better at speaking by actually speaking! )

I LOVE seeing so many of my lovely clients getting involved and sending texts and voice notes. And just having a go at their own level.

It’s so amazing to see people using their Spanish and getting more confident without worrying about getting everything perfect!

Do you ever come home from Spain and think…

“I really should learn Spanish.” 🇪🇸

I hear that all the time.

Well… maybe this is your sign to finally do it ! 😊

Whether you’re starting completely from scratch, you’ve done a bit on Duolingo, or you’ve learnt some Spanish before and want to get back into it, there’s a class for you.

Here’s what’s coming up in Beccles this September:

🇪🇸 Beginners – starts Wednesday 16th September at 6pm

🇪🇸 Next Steps – starts Monday 14th September at 8:10pm

🇪🇸 Spanish Club – weekly daytime and evening classes for learners who’d like to keep building their confidence.

We learn in lovely local venues like Old School Coffee Ltd, so you can grab a coffee, settle in and enjoy learning Spanish in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. ☕

I’ve also got my new Sip & Speak Spanish Wine & Cheese Evening coming up in September too if you fancy a fun evening of Spanish, wine and good company. 🍷🇪🇸

It was so hot tonight that I set Spanish class up outside in the street instead.

It was pretty warm inside, so we made the most of the sunshine instead! 😂☀️🇪🇸

Whiteboards, sunshine, an agua, cerveza or glass of vino and an evening chatting away in Spanish.

It honestly felt like I was back in Spain. I love how everyone sits outside in the evenings and tonight had exactly that sort of feel.

This is one of the reasons I love teaching adults. We can just be flexible. If it’s too hot inside, we’ll have class outside!

I love teaching Spanish. I love creating resources around the people I teach, planning lessons and sharing stories from Spain and the Canary Islands.

But I also love everything that happens around the lesson.

People arrive a little early for a chat. They ask about each other’s families, holidays and weekends. They stay behind afterwards because no one wants to rush off.

Somewhere along the way they’ve become their own little community, and that’s exactly what I hoped SJ Languages would become.

I’m there to teach Spanish, but every week I learn something too. I genuinely feel very lucky to do what I do.

A huge thank you to OLD SCHOOL COFFEE and Printing Press for letting us spill out onto the pavement for the evening and looking after us with agua, cerveza and wine. It definitely made it feel even more like Spain. 💛

Tonight the finalists for the Class Business Awards are announced.

I entered SJ Languages into the awards this year and for me doing the application made me take the time to stop and reflect on how far my business has come.

I left my teaching job and started with 1:1 tuition and then grew into GCSE Spanish and French groups.

Since then, it’s evolved again into a community of around 50 adults learning Spanish every week through classes, socials, wine tastings, bingo nights and WhatsApp groups.

Looking back at the application made me realise just how much I’ve learnt along the way.

I’ve made mistakes, changed direction (many a time!), tried things that haven’t worked and followed ideas that have.

Some of the best things in the business now weren’t even part of the original plan.

It also reminded me that this business has grown during some of the most difficult years of my life personally, which makes me even more proud of how far it has come.

But what I’m most proud of isn’t the numbers though. It’s seeing people build confidence, make friends, support each other and actually use their Spanish in real life.

I love hearing clients meeting up outside of class. Chatting with each other about their lives. I’ve got to meet family members, partners, and friends of my clients as they share bits of their world with me.

And when things have been tough for me personally and I’ve been dealing with grief and loss my clients have been my champions. My cheerleaders. Just like I’m there for them. I love the community and everyone in it and it just keeps going from strength to strength.

Whatever happens tonight, I’m so proud of what SJ Languages has become and grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey so far.

Good luck to all the other businesses waiting for the results this evening.

Only week 4 of this beginners Spanish group and this week they were already:

• introducing themselves
• saying where they’re from
• exchanging phone numbers and email addresses
• adapting conversations
• making things up in Spanish
• helping each other
• laughing the whole way through

Watching adults realise they actually CAN communicate in Spanish is honestly one of my favourite parts of teaching.

Monday’s class was full of conversation practice, confidence building and lots of real-life Spanish in a relaxed café setting ☕

I honestly love the buzz at the end of classes like this when people realise how much Spanish they’ve actually used in just one hour 💛
