Honoured to share the platform with colleagues at the International Co-op Conference, discussing all things ‘Our Malawi Partnership’.

Great to hear from the project lead of MAFECO (Malawi Federation of Cooperatives) that the project has brought HOPE to small holder farmers in Malawi.

Also sharing the love for our macadamia oil with test tasting - watch this space!

Thank you CEO of Debbie Robinson for confirming that Malawi macadamia nuts ‘are the best in the world!’

Here is a recently received photo of a magnificent macadamia tree taken by a Malawian small holder farmer - in all its glory.
🌳
The photo was taken as part of Neno Macadamia Trust’s tree survey with co-operatives in Malawi to support the carbon damage mitigation work with small holder farmers.
🌳
The tree has enough space beneath it for other useful crops such as maize and groundnuts - see the ridges below it being prepared for planting.
🌳
One tree at a time this magnificent tree is changing the livelihoods of small holder farmers across Malawi.
🌳
Thank you to all our valued customers who continue to support the Malawian small holder farmers by buying these delicious macadamia nuts.

Nutcellars is a family company that sources macadamia nuts from cooperations of smallholder farmers in Malawi. They have been working with the farmers for over 30 years, and have a strong connection to Malawi, the warm heart of Africa.

Their great-great-grandmother, Alice Cameron, arrived from Scotland in Blantyre Malawi in 1905.

With support from Equal Exchange, The Scottish Government helped the farmers build a warehouse and become members of Highland Macadamia Co-operative Union Limited (HIMACUL).

As part of their Malawi Partnership pioneered by Central Co-op, Nutcellars are working closely with True Origin and are now supplying Nutcellars Malawi Macadamia into Scotmid Coops mainly in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Quote from our mum who visited the Malawi Macadamia co-ops in 2019 “it was such a pleasure meeting Mwai - administrator & secretariat for HIMACUL farmers. It’s great to be able to celebrate the work that she does on this International Women’s Day in 2024”.

Mwai has worked for the small holder macadamia co-operative HIMACUL for 14 years and plays a pivotal role coordinating the work of the co-ops and the HIMACUL board in:

🏆Administering the trading of the macadamia nuts
🏆Fair Trade Certification work
🏆Coordinating meetings
🏆Data collection and administration
🏆the smooth running of the HIMACUL office

Celebrating women like Mwai and all other women involved in small holder macadamia farming in Malawi today.

35-40% of small holder macadamia farmers in Malawi are women.

Women macadamia farmers in Malawi are contributing significantly to achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, not least STG 5 (Gender Equality), but also:
🌳 STG 1 (no Poverty)
🌳 STG 2 (Zero Hunger)
🌳 STG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
🌳 STG 10 (Reducing Inequality)
🌳 STG 13 (Climate Action).

Traditionally it is the women who cultivate the land to plant the annual crops of maize and vegetables. By planting macadamia trees this backbreaking work can be reduced as maintaining the macadamia crop is much less labour intensive. It is also known as a ‘retirement crop’ as some small holder farmers’ trees are producing fruit (nuts) even after 40 years!

Many Malawian women macadamia farmers also care for and support extended family including orphaned grandchildren. Macadamia enable them to earn a valuable income and also to feed their families with this extraordinarily nutritious nut, counterbalancing their otherwise maize based diets.
