Found myself standing a few feet further away from a console than I’m used to; I’ve never been in a recording session where I’m not at the controls - such a different experience and a real treat 🙂

Drum setup breakdown from a recent session with

Quick and dirty run through setup and theory behind tuning.

Key: D Minor
Kit: Pearl Masters Custom
Snare Premier 14x6: 4th (G)
Rack: min 7th (C)
Rack 2: 4th (G)
Floor: Root (D)

The basic theory here is that most drum fills typically occur in the last measure of a song section - I’ll usually start with a “colourful” tuning that musically leads into the first chord of the next section. In the case of this song; we’re leading into a G chord; using the intervals of the key of the song (D Minor).

Confused yet?

Well - taking a purely musical approach; you can work this out at a piano by playing the drum fills on the keys to find what feels good… it’s what I do every session and serves me well.

If the song modulates or these tunings don’t work in other sections… I’ll simply set up more toms to cater for this.

Not bothered about it and just want to play? That’s totally fine - leave it to weirdos like me to obsess about this stuff 🤪

🏆 Awards-style end of year sign off speech: 2021 edition 🏆

2021 was crazy - I never thought I’d see so much happen in one year.

The studio had a complete redesign, we moved to a beautiful house in the countryside, produced/mixed/co-wrote more songs than I could possibly count, assembled a kick-ass production team, did a show in an arena…all with whilst watching our son grow 🙂

A huge amount of praise and thanks are due (like any good self indulgent speech 🙄)…

Firstly, and (without a doubt) most importantly, to my better half Dawn Ireland for being the wonderfully caring, patient and loving person that she is and for keeping our little human alive for entire year 🥰

Huge love to all the bands and artists from around the world that trusted me and shared the creation of your music with me… both old faces and new. So many amazing songs were created and so many opportunities born out of the results. You’re all awesome 👊

On a professional level; huge thanks to Nick Panorama Mixing & Mastering and Dark Label Music - Daniel Grimmett for all your advice and guidance. Equally huge thanks to Liam Knight Danny Barton Vadim Kharaz and (more recently) for all your hard work this year. Not half of this would have happened without you all - ever grateful 🙏
