Found myself standing a few feet further away from a console than I’m used to; I’ve never been in a recording session where I’m not at the controls - such a different experience and a real treat 🙂

Drum setup breakdown from a recent session with

Quick and dirty run through setup and theory behind tuning.

Key: D Minor
Kit: Pearl Masters Custom
Snare Premier 14x6: 4th (G)
Rack: min 7th (C)
Rack 2: 4th (G)
Floor: Root (D)

The basic theory here is that most drum fills typically occur in the last measure of a song section - I’ll usually start with a “colourful” tuning that musically leads into the first chord of the next section. In the case of this song; we’re leading into a G chord; using the intervals of the key of the song (D Minor).

Confused yet?

Well - taking a purely musical approach; you can work this out at a piano by playing the drum fills on the keys to find what feels good… it’s what I do every session and serves me well.

If the song modulates or these tunings don’t work in other sections… I’ll simply set up more toms to cater for this.

Not bothered about it and just want to play? That’s totally fine - leave it to weirdos like me to obsess about this stuff 🤪
