Coaching can feel like a black box! Why does it work? How can asking questions help someone change the way they think and behave? Exploring the neuroscience behind transformation and effectiveness is important not only for coaches, but also for leaders who are embarking on coaching to make the most of a coaching programme and even take it further for themselves.

My guest today is the leader of the Advanced Diploma that I'm studying right now: Ann Betz. In this episode, Ann explains why she was drawn to neuroscience as a coach and how she has used it to take her coaching to a different level by understanding what we need to be truly effective and creative: an appropriate amount of stimulation, an ability to regulate emotions and to allow our brains to function with flexibility and adaptability by understanding the different components of the brain.

The best leaders are those who can use those parts of their brains to be flexible to both communicate the big picture with empathy and to provide detail and structure: to zoom in and out, using both sides of the brain effectively to communicate well.

Welcome to the 2022/3 winter edition of Lead On digital magazine from Ann Collins Coaching.

Leaders in today's climate need to be aware that when they are asking people in their team to change, change is also needed in many areas of their personal lives. Change on this scale requires us all to become more aware of ourselves, our environment and to tune in again to what is important - our values. These are what help us to navigate change with clear vision, calm focus and a growth mindset.

In this edition, we will explore managing change with greater ease by harnessing what neuroscience has to offer along with some coaching approaches and techniques that can help you to lead change for yourself or your team/organisation. Working with the brain makes sense on so many levels: change is faster and more energy efficient. However, it also requires courage to challenge old ways of thinking and leaders should note that support is required for those getting out of their comfort zones!

Great to be coaching leaders of the future, face to face in the U.K. in a very beautiful part of England - south of London with stunning views across the countryside. As part of their Sixth Form studies, the students at Sutton Valence School have a leadership development programme which prepares them for the self-leadership challenges in their personal work and leadership roles within the school and beyond. We’ve been thinking about and as well as reflecting on the actions required today! Such an impressive group of students with great maturity and creativity. As always, the learning was two ways! What a great start to September!
