This week’s featured album on Around the World is Our Freedoms Must Be Won by the 3-piece British based band Kafya and the Afghan singer Elaha Soroor. It is a fusion of Afghan vocal heritage and Kefaya’s unique world influenced sound. You can hear 4 tracks from the album in this week’s show on Sunday the 13th at 10pm. There will also be music from Austria’s Alicia Edelweiss, Australia’s Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, Scotland’s Colin Steele, Slovakia’s Folk&Bass Orchestra & Ženy Z Muzičky, Korea’s LEENALCHI, Colombian/Canadian Lido Pimienta, and from Greece, The Voodoo Drummer Duo.

The featured album is also from Pulia. Il Mito by Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is a band from that special part of the country where Greek and Italian languages still live side by side. On Around the World tonight at 10pm, the featured album is América! by Cuban band Orquesta Akokán. The golden age of Cuban mambo is not just reflected in the music of Orquesta Akokán as some sort of nostalgic trip, it is a genuine attempt to incorporate and further develop the genre for the 21st century.

Part 2 of the show is a visit to Brno in the Czech Republic to hear music from their annual festival “Music Marathon”, including a trip into the old Water Tanks to hear guitarists use the acoustic reverb to enhance their music.

It is with great sadness we have learned about the passing of Gerry Kelly. Gerry was a legend of broadcasting in our wee country. He was also a great supporter of Slice Audio and a personal friend to many of our presenters. Our condolences go to his family and friends.
