"Over 16 years ago, my then editor asked me to ring Jeffrey Donaldson. It was a Friday and for a fortnight rumours had been swirling that the then DUP MP had separated from his wife," writes Sam McBride.

"There were various versions of what was supposedly behind this, but most of them involved claims of a gay lover. If true, this was explosive for a party which then opposed gay marriage and had fought against even decriminalising homosexuality.

"The problem with rumours is that they’re often wrong — sometimes wholly wrong, or sometimes a little bit off. If newspapers printed every rumour we heard, we’d have few readers and wouldn’t be in business for long due to the libel payouts that would have to be made..."
