Most diversification plans do not fail on the idea. They stall in the gaps between trades.

Look at what is booked into Farm Business Innovation Show this year and the shape of a project appears. Building and construction. Business services. Energy and renewables. Accommodation and lodging. The paperwork, then the structure, then what powers it, then what fills it.

"The proverbial advice about eggs and single baskets came from somewhere after all."

Mark Horler is founder and chairman of UK Urban AgriTech - UKUAT the industry association for Controlled Environment Agriculture, and sits on the Farm Business Innovation Show Steering Committee.

On starting out in CEA: know your market first. Who are you selling to, and what will they pay? That answers both what you grow and how much technology you actually need. Then think past the novelty. Who wants your produce in five years, and in ten?

On the pitfalls: poor design, and getting the technology level wrong. If you want a high tech vertical farming system you need a serious power supply, and the HVAC has to be right from the start. Retrofitting is not your friend.

The till in the farm shop knows what it sold. It does not know what the café took, or what came through the gate.

ICRTouch (FM502) build EPoS software, with over 150,000 installs of their flagship product in the UK and 30 years in hospitality and retail behind them. For a diversified farm the point is not the till. It is that ordering, ticketing and the back office stop being three separate jobs.

The quickest way to judge a show is to look at what the other stands are selling.

At Farm Business Innovation Show that is renewable energy, modular buildings, glamping accommodation, shipping containers, farm shop developments and EPOS, vending machines, ground reinforcement and property consultancy.

Walking past them: 62% farmers, 20% farm shops, 11% landowners, 7% zoos. 71% of them farm more than 50 hectares.

Already booked for 2026 include Coal Bunker Glamping Pods (FM260), Fastned UK (FM528), the Self Storage Association UK - SSA UK (FM434) and Bidwells (FM224).

Most diversification ideas start with a building or a field. This one starts with the power supply.

Josh Riddett of Easy Compute is on the Farm Business Innovation Stage, asking whether an AI data centre is something farm land and farm power can earn from. The session title puts the question plainly: "How can an AI data center on your farm generate up to a 201% ROI over 4 years?"

Five new names for November, and between them they cover most of a diversification project.

Bluestar Business Finance (FM558) for the funding. Container Innovations (FM430) for the structure. EDF Onsite Power (FM632) and EDF Energy (FM670) for what it runs on. The Original Baker UK (FM654) for what you sell once the doors are open.

That is the useful part of two days under one roof. You can have all of those conversations before you commit to the first one.

Third generation at Peatswood Farm, and the milk price still is not his to set.

Arthur Fair's grandfather bought the place 45 years ago. His father ran it for 30. Now Arthur is coming into the business as his father steps back, and he is clear-eyed about dairy: he loves it, but too much of it rests on the weather and a price somebody else decides.

So the family has put holiday cabins on the parts of the farm that were never going to graze or crop well. The same land, a price they set themselves, and a domestic travel market that keeps growing.

Arthur comes to the show in November with the brochure marked up and three or four talks picked out. He says he always leaves with an idea he was not looking for.

Not every supplier wants a stand.

The Farm Shop at Farm Business Innovation Show is a walk-through replica farm shop, built with design partner Appetiteme, with the Farm Shop Talks running alongside it. Rather than exhibiting from a stand, suppliers can showcase their products inside the feature itself, in front of farmers working out what to sell and how.

74% of the people who come to Farm Business Innovation are decision-makers. 64% are farm owners, farm managers or landowners.

Space inside the Farm Shop is limited. Our very own Kara Patterson explains how it works.
