She may be known for her larger-than-life character Edina in Absolutely Fabulous, but away from the screen, Jennifer Saunders enjoys a quiet and peaceful life with her husband in the heart of Devon.
Jennifer Saunders is a successful comedian and actress, best known for her roles in the sketch show French and Saunders, the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, and as the voice of the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2. Over the years, the 66-year-old has featured in numerous well-known TV shows and films, including Friends, Let Them Eat Cake, Minions, and Sing.
Off-screen, Jennifer leads a far more low-key lifestyle in Devon with her husband of 40 years, fellow comedian Adrian Edmondson. The couple, who married in 1985, left behind their busy London life for a secluded farmhouse on the edge of Dartmoor. According to MailOnline, they sold their London home for £2.2 million back in 2002 and relocated to the pretty market town of Chagford.
They reportedly purchased a £1 million farmhouse set within five acres of land, complete with a swimming pool. The property was originally intended as a holiday home for themselves and their three daughters Ella, Beattie, and Freya but they later decided to make it their permanent residence.
She previously told the Evening Standard: “We’ve lived there for many years and I love being surrounded by beautiful countryside and the sense of community that exists in a village."
In March, it was announced that the couple had finally received approval for an extension to their Dartmoor home, following a six-month-long dispute with planning authorities. They initially submitted their application to the Dartmoor National Park Planning Authority in August 2024 and aimed to “reinforce the setting and significance” of the historic property.
However, it faced pushback from a building conservation officer. In an official statement, the officer argued that the proposed changes would provide “no benefit” to the public.
After these initial objections, the pair engaged in half a year of negotiations with the local authority before finally securing “conditional approval” for their plans.
Chagford in Devon is a beautiful market town located on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor, close to the River Teign. The town is said to have a microclimate, meaning it experiences more sunshine and less rain compared to other parts of Dartmoor.
Architecturally, the town is stunning, with highlights including the idyllic church of St Michael and Castle Drogo — a striking country house overlooking the town from nearby Drewsteignton.
Chagford is home to a variety of independent shops, cafés, art galleries, and excellent eateries, as well as boutique hotels and charming local pubs. It’s also a haven for lovers of the outdoors, with miles of moorland to explore just beyond the doorstep.
The Times named Chagford one of the "best places to live in the UK" in 2021, describing the village as "arty, environmentally minded and hospitable".
Homes in Chagford don't come cheap. According to *Rightmove*, the overall average price of properties in the past year was £494,203. Most sales during this time were detached homes, which sold for an average of £805,000. Terraced houses fetched around £295,450, while flats sold for approximately £270,000.
Overall, sold prices in Chagford between 2023 and 2024 were 29 per cent down on the previous year and similar to the 2014 peak of £492,074.
