Navigating the Evolving UK Immigration Landscape

Introduction:

The UK Home Office's recent announcement heralds significant changes to the immigration system, stemming from the five-point plan unveiled in December 2023. This analysis explores key amendments to the Skilled Worker visa scheme, new entrant discounts, occupation code adjustments, expanded supplementary employment permissions, and shifts in the Global Business Mobility route. Additionally, it examines the evolving immigration climate and offers insights into anticipated developments in 2024.

Skilled Worker Changes:

Effective April 4, 2024, the minimum salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas will rise to £38,700 or the prevailing rate, with transitional provisions for existing visa holders. New entrant discounts are retained but with revised thresholds, potentially impacting graduate roles.

Other Changes:

Occupation codes undergo recalibration, and supplementary employment permissions expand, allowing Skilled Workers to engage in additional roles within certain constraints. The Global Business Mobility route witnesses a salary threshold increase to £48,500.

Immigration Climate:

The Home Office's approach to processing applications has intensified, with increased scrutiny and extended processing times observed.

Future Prospects:

Anticipated developments include the transition to e-visas, modifications to the EU Settlement Scheme, and the expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorization.

Conclusion:

Stakeholders must adapt proactively to navigate the evolving UK immigration landscape, ensuring compliance and facilitating seamless processes amidst regulatory changes.

The UK's full enforcement of the ban on overseas workers bringing family members has commenced. This includes care workers, including those from India, who will now face restrictions on bringing dependant family members with them to the UK due to new visa rules.

The UK Home Office cited concerns over a disproportionate number of dependants accompanying workers on the care visa route last year, totaling 120,000 dependants for 100,000 workers. The aim is to significantly reduce net migration and address visa abuse, which is deemed unsustainable. UK Home Secretary James

Cleverly emphasized the importance of addressing abuse and manipulation of the immigration system, while ensuring fairness to British workers and allowing the best international talent to contribute to society and the economy.

Here it is👇
Not only do these places have an average house price of under £225,000, but many of them have experienced price GROWTH in the 12 months to December 2023.
The data is taken from the December 2023 Hometrack house price index, which looks at 20 UK cities. m
Mortgage repayments (per month) with a 10% deposit, at 5.7%, taken over a 30 year term would be something like this
Belfast £889
Glasgow £764
Newcastle £799
Liverpool £821
Sheffield £898
Leeds £1,091
Manchester £1,164
Nottingham £1,056
Birmingham £1,087
Aberdeen £733

With these cities all being Northern, it is interesting that the report also stated that 'almost half of buyers living in southern England looking to move >10 miles in search of better value for money.

If you rent for £1,000 per month, yes you have flexibility and the landlord is responsible for maintenance costs... but you still have bills and the landlord can put the rent up each year so you will have spent at least £120k over 10 years, if not more.
Short term, house prices rise and fall, and we are currently going through a period where there is a bit of fluctuation.
However, over the long term house prices rise, so let's do an example:
House bought for £200k with 10% deposit Mortgage £180k at 5% = £966 per month
A 3% average house price rise per year is not huge, but it would mean that in 10 years your £200k property would be worth £269k.
As you have been paying your mortgage down over the 10 years, you only have £146k outstanding on your mortgage.
Therefore the potential equity you could have in your home based on these numbers is £123,000.
And that's not including any renovations you do to add value further.
Time in the market is everything.
Save if this was useful.
