A 23-year-old woman from the United States has been sentenced to more than five years in a UK prison after customs officers discovered crack co***ne hidden inside a large wheel of Parmesan cheese.

She arrived at Heathrow Airport in late May 2025 after travelling through several South American countries, including Peru, Paraguay, and Brazil. Border officers became suspicious of her luggage and inspected the cheese wheel, finding drugs valued at around £800,000.

The woman told investigators she had picked up the cheese in Peru at the request of a friend, but she admitted guilt in court earlier this month. Alongside the drugs, officers found a notebook entry describing her recent travels and the fact she had recently left university.

A senior officer from the UK’s National Crime Agency said the case was a reminder that hiding drugs in unusual items will not stop border staff from finding them and that such crimes carry serious consequences.

A 31-year-old woman, Katie Bland, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after assaulting her elderly partner and threatening a bystander during a violent incident on a bus.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Bland had a volatile relationship with the victim, a man in his 70s, often verbally abusing him and demanding money. On January 6, after an argument, Bland tracked him down at Halifax bus station. She called him a racial slur and a “dirty dog” before grabbing his coat collar and shaking him, demanding cash.

The man offered £20, but Bland insisted on his bank card, which he refused to hand over. She agreed to accompany him to an ATM but continued to verbally abuse and kick him on the bus. A female passenger who witnessed the attack attempted to intervene, prompting Bland to grab her scarf and threaten to “knock her jaw off” if she didn’t stay quiet.

Bland eventually used the victim’s bank card to withdraw £40 before police arrived. She gave “no comment” in her interview but later admitted robbery, assault by beating, fraud, and blackmail.

In a statement, the victim said he felt depressed, isolated from friends, and fearful due to Bland’s behaviour, which he claimed had worsened in recent weeks.

A prison officer from South Wales could be jailed after admitting to a relationship with a prisoner.

Megan Breen, 23, had the affair while working at two prisons — HMP Usk and HMP Prescoed in Gwent — between February and May 2022.

The court heard she abused her position of trust as a public officer by having the relationship without any reasonable excuse.

Breen, from Newport, has been released on bail but was warned she could be sent to prison when sentenced.

Jamie Stevens, 51, lived for years in his Devon flat alongside the body of his ex-girlfriend, Anouska Sites.

Ms Sites was last seen alive in May 2022. Police didn’t discover her remains until May 2025. The court heard she had mental health problems and addictions, and had been in regular contact with police before she vanished. She was reported missing in April 2023.

When police first questioned Stevens in April 2025, he claimed he hadn’t seen her since early 2022. On May 27, officers went to his former flat in Upton Road, Torquay, and found it in a hoarded state, full of rubbish, faeces, and bottled urine.

During their search, they lifted a blanket in the living room and found a skeletal arm. They also noticed air fresheners placed around the room, apparently to hide any smell.

Stevens admitted the body was Ms Sites. He said she had visited in January 2023 to stay the night. When he came home the next day, he found her dead on the sofa. Instead of calling the authorities, he covered her with a blanket and avoided the living room, continuing to live in the bedroom.

Stevens pleaded guilty to preventing a lawful burial and perverting the course of justice by lying to police about her whereabouts.

A 39-year-old woman from Lincoln, obsessed with weapons, has been jailed for eight years and six months after trying to make a semi-automatic gun using a 3D printer.

Zoe Watts, of St Helens Avenue, was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday, 8 August, after being found guilty in June.

Police arrested Watts in December last year when armed officers stopped her car in Lincoln. At the same time, other officers searched her home and found a large collection of weapons, including knives, a crossbow, and parts for two 3D-printed guns – one of which was almost complete.

Police began investigating after receiving a tip that Watts was buying illegal materials online. They planned a careful operation to arrest her and seize the weapons to protect the public.

During the search, officers also found worrying internet searches, such as “has anybody been killed by a 3D printed gun?” and other research into buying and making weapons.

In court, Watts claimed she was making the weapons as “toys,” but the jury convicted her. This is the first case of its kind in the UK involving a 3D-printed firearm.

As well as her prison sentence, Watts was given a forfeiture and destruction order for her weapons, and after release, she will be under a Serious Crime Prevention Order for five years.

Watts had worked as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) in Lincolnshire for more than eight years before the offence.
