The United States government has placed The Gambia on a new list of countries, whose nationals must pay a heavy visa bond, before traveling on a visitor’s visa to the US. The rule, which comes into effect on October 11th this year, applies to Gambian citizens applying for B1/B2 visas, the most common category for tourism and business travel. Under the policy, Gambians who are found eligible for a visa will still need to post a bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, depending on the decision of the consular officer at the time of the visa interview....

The grinding cement scarcity, which hit the provincial town of Farafenni and environs, has now entered its second month, resulting in significant revenue and job losses and stalled construction projects. The URR roads and bridges were inaugurated a few years ago with much pomp and ceremony with President Adama Barrow, laying claim to their realisation, but the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Lawyer Ousainou Darboe has recently indicated that President Barrow has no bragging right over the landmark projects. Darboe explained that the projects came to fruition through his instrumentality as he was the one who lobbied funds from China for their implementation....

In a heartfelt and unexpected development, Lamin J. Darboe, a respected figure in Gambian law and a dedicated member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has announced his resignation from the party.

Darboe, whose legal expertise has earned him great admiration, shared his deep concerns about the UDP's lack of transparency and its hesitance to pursue essential internal reforms. Many are now reflecting on what this means for the future of one of Gambia’s key opposition parties, and the impact on the vision Darboe has tirelessly advocated for.

Tribalism poses significant dangers to Gambian society, often dividing communities along ethnic lines, fostering distrust and conflict. We can engage in constructive debates by promoting our individual perspectives without resorting to tribal diatribes, focusing on what adds value to our society. Key reasons for its potential harm include: 1. Social Division: Tribalism can lead to polarization, where individuals prioritize tribal affiliations over national identity, limiting social cohesion and mutual support....

The idea of Vous is one of the most unique and enduring cultural phenomena in Banjul. The word itself derives from the French rendezvous, meaning appointment or meeting place. In the Gambian context, Vous is far more than just a physical location; it is a social institution where young men, mainly in urban Banjul, gather to socialize, exchange ideas, and build lifelong bonds....

In most of the riotous situations in The Gambia, the law enforcement have always been perceived and seen as hostile or bullish to journalists. The Gambia Press Union (GPU) and the Gambia Police Force (GPF) have yet to develop a comprehensive strategy on reporting in dangerous situations such as riots. The refusal of Gambia government officials visa by the United States embassy in Banjul to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) could save Gambian taxpayers more than US$200,000 just on air tickets alone.
