Salam sisters, I hope you are all well. I haven’t been on here in a while, I’m hoping to get back to being active really soon, insha’Allah.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been completely absorbed in learning about neurodiversity and emotional regulation in children. I recently began working in an SEMH school, and subhanAllah… it has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my journey so far.
Every day, I see how differently children respond when their nervous system becomes overwhelmed. One child explodes in anger, another walks out of class. Someone disappears into silence while others become noisy or chaotic.
Being in this environment has shown me just how misunderstood these reactions often are. Beneath the surface, there’s always a child who is struggling, not a child who is “naughty” or “disobedient.”
What has touched me most is what happens after the reaction: the shame, the guilt, the worry that they are “too much,” the way they avoid eye contact or make themselves small.
So many of these children are holding feelings much bigger than their capacity. Their behaviour is communication.
It’s their body’s way of asking for help with emotions they haven’t learned to manage yet.
Working so closely with neurodiverse children and children without additional needs keeps reminding me:
Children aren’t giving us a hard time… they’re having a hard time.
Our children need emotionally safe adults, parents, teachers, teaching assistants and trained counsellors/therapists who can help them make sense of their inner world without shame.
If your child is struggling, getting support early is powerful.
It doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with them, it means you’re helping them understand themselves better, build emotional language, and develop healthier coping.
Insha’Allah, I’ll be sharing more soon, from my counselling experience, trauma-informed training, and what I’m learning in SEMH environments about anger, dysregulation, overwhelm and big feelings.
I’ve missed you all, and I pray Allah fills your homes with peace, understanding, and ease. ❤️💐Keep me in your Duas 😁
