Today Otis Irie, my friend, from Harmony Reggae Band Birmingham will be laid to rest.

Otis wasn’t just a musician — he was a true reggae soul. A man who carried rhythm, warmth, love and unity wherever he went. Through his music, his spirit, and his presence, he brought people together and left memories that will live on long after today.

As DJDancerider, I feel honoured to have known him, shared some music with him, and called him my friend.
Otis represented what reggae is truly about: love, respect, togetherness, roots and real heart.

Today is a sad day, but it is also a day to celebrate a life that touched many people. The music, the laughter, the memories and the love will never fade.

Rest easy, my friend Otis Irie. Your song may be quiet today, but your spirit will play on forever.

Some DJs don’t realise how quickly a dance floor can die at an event 👇

As a reggae DJ, I’ve seen a dance floor go from absolutely bouncing to almost empty in under two minutes.

And honestly, it usually starts with one small thing.

One bad song.
One awkward transition.
People getting bored.

Once a few people leave the dance floor, others naturally start following.

Because dance floors are all about momentum.

When people see a packed floor, they want to be part of it.

But once the energy starts dropping, people start looking around for something else to do.

That’s why, as DJs, we’re constantly protecting the momentum of the room all night long.

We’re watching everything.

Who’s starting to lose energy.
Who’s carrying the dance floor.
Which songs are connecting.
Which songs are losing people.
Whether the room feels like it’s building… or falling apart.

And sometimes, you have to react fast.

Sometimes, you have to take a chance — like I did last night.

I was playing a tune when I noticed a group of ladies sitting on the floor doing the moves to “Oops Upside Your Head” to the dancehall tune I was playing.

So I took a punt.

I dropped the “Oops Upside Your Head” track right in the middle of the mix.

They went crazy.

Next thing you know, they had everyone lined up, sitting on the floor, doing the dance.

The momentum was back.

Then we rolled straight back into the reggae.

There have been plenty of events where I’ve completely changed direction musically because I could feel the energy starting to shift.

That’s why timing matters so much.

At DJ events, you don’t always have unlimited time to recover from mistakes.

One wrong decision can completely change the direction of the whole party.

The best DJs aren’t just trying to create energy…

We’re constantly trying to keep it alive.
