Barefoot In The Head was established in 2000, as a regular Thursday night in Miss Moneypenny’s Bar (now Island Bar) in Birmingham City Centre with DJs such as Sam Tierney (Solar Stone & Music For The People Records), Rick Shaw (DJ Switch), Roc 1, Damian, Sparra (DMC) and Chris Ford (who is sorely missed). The name came from one of Sam’s much loved Balearic records by A Man Called Adam.
The night then moved to Bar Room Bar and took place weekly for the first year of the bar’s existence.
Since this time, Barefoot DJs have graced the turntables in bars such as The Vaults, The Cube Champagne Skybar, Bull’s Head Davenports, The Mockingbird, The Stable, 1000 Trades, Bourne & Co, The Jailbird, Bar Opus and The Plough Harborne. We advised and helped set up the DJ night at Rofuto Skybar which took place weekly.
The DJs behind Barefoot In The Head first started playing vinyl in the 1980s.
Damian ran Samebeat Records in the city for many years, supplying rare funk, soul, disco and boogie to record diggers around the UK. He has since collaborated on various funk/soul/house records and has DJ’d for major brands such as Diesel and along side the likes of Pete Tong, Jazzy Jay and Carl Cox. Damian now writes for http://ukvibe.org/ An example of Damian's production: https://youtu.be/6giASl3N2_Y
Roc 1 has gained regional stardom in DMC mixing championships and has co-promoted the legendary night Substance at the Medicine Bar with Chris Reed (owner of Who Sampled .com). He has helped bring seminal hip hop acts to Birmingham such as De La Soul, Jeru the Damaja and Afrika Bambaataa, whom he also DJd along side. Roc hosts various community radio shows playing funk, soul, house and hip hop. His more recent DJ excursions include sessions for A Few Good Men. Ollie has DJ’d in Brum since around 2000 and set up the brilliant Yardbird Jazz Club in Brum city centre in the mid 2000s which lasted 8 years and was home to brilliant breakdancers, jazz funk and soul bands from far and wide, as well as local DJs. Ollie still DJs under his Yardbird moniker in the Dark Hourse, Cafe Colette, 1000 Trades to name a few.
Don Snorkie curates Barefoot events and is an occasional guest DJ along with Ollie Lloyd (former of owner of the Yardbird Jazz Club) and Ken Byng. Don Snorkie has produced and released dance music records since 1991 with his music being playlisted by DJs such as Craig Charles, Fat Boy Slim and Tim “Love” Lee. His work has been used by the BBC, Manchester United and appears on various compilations. Examples here: https://youtu.be/lp7zmqPop8o & https://youtu.be/riNCXOyyQf8
