Yesterday, on August 1st we gathered in Kabul for a heartfelt farewell to our friend, Aliakbar Sakhi.

His journey home wasn't easy - last year, he lost his life on K2 due to being left alone overnight in harsh weather at 7300 metres. Since then the search for him was going on by his close circle in Hikeventures team, and specially his wife who never gave up. This year, with the help of the Pakistani government, our .afg team members and the Afghan Embassy in Islamabad we finally brought him back.

Aliakbar's wish was to rest in Kabul, and now that wish has come true. This was more than a journey; it was a reminder of the bond between nations and the strength of friendship. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

He lost his life to represent his country and nation in a positive light. He was the first Afghan mountaineer to attempt climbing K2. Today, he rests in peace, leaving behind a story of courage and unity. May Aliakbar inspire us all to reach for our dreams, no matter how challenging.

Rest in peace brother, you will be missed 🙏🏽

Morning sun over Kamdesh.

Kamdesh is a pictrureesque mountain village with an elevation of 2000m+. The district produces remarkable craftsmanship in wood work and carpentry. The first outsider to visit Kamdesh was a British soldier in the 1890s named George Robertson and wrote of his travels in “The Kafirs of Hindu Kush”.

Kamdesh is probably the most up to date and least remote district in Nuristan. It has to do with being close to Pakistan’s Chitral, and the nearest town in Kunar is a 2 hour drive with a smoother road compared to going into Parun or Waigal.

But this proximity to civilisation comes with a price. Kamdesh has been at the center of warfare in the past 20 years. They have been shelled and droned by all sides. The Battle of Kamdesh in 2009 became “bloodiest engagement in ”. The film “Outpost” is based on it.

Despite enduring tragedies, I found Kamdeshis to be bright, innovative and well connected to the world beyond .

Exploring Nuristan 🏞️:

Spent an incredible 14 days exploring , a hidden gem in . From the picturesque districts of Parun, Waigal, and Kamdesh, this province is a true natural wonderland. Green mountains, forests, and rivers abound, creating a breathtaking backdrop.

Nuristan is like Pandora in , blessed with stunning nature, hidden gems, and lithium deposits. This remote corner is home to a remarkable people with their own language, unique culture, and cherished traditions.

But life here hasn't been easy for the locals. Isolation from the rest of the country due to conflict and poverty has posed challenges.

We had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the beauty, sitting down with the resilient locals, listening to their hardships, and seeking ways to make a difference.
