For many years, the origins of the fast style of toasting the rapid-fire, rhythmic lyrical delivery that would go on to influence not just reggae and dancehall but also grime, jungle, and UK hip-hop have been the subject of much debate and speculation. Enthusiasts and historians alike have pondered where it truly began, who pioneered it, and which sound system was the first to showcase it to the world.

Among the most common accounts, many have pointed to the legendary Saxon Studio International Sound System as the birthplace of this high-speed lyrical technique. Within that iconic circle of MCs, one name often rises to the top: Peter King. Revered by many, he’s frequently credited with originating or at least revolutionizing the “fast style” that would go on to shape generations of microphone talent.

Well, today on Laidback But Serious with Grantley Haynes, the man himself Peter King stepped forward to set the record straight. And what a story it was. With clarity, humility, and depth, Peter King laid out his own journey, detailing how the style came to be, where the inspiration stemmed from, and how it evolved within the unique environment of 1980s sound system culture in the UK.

This is a short excerpt from my book launch, Crack Co***ne Treatment and Me it is the powerful story of how the team and I set up the crack co***ne treatment service in Birmingham, UK. Inspired by the devastating effects of crack i witnessed in the USA during the 1980s, I embarked on a mission to help those affected armed only with determination and belief in the human spirit. The treatment approach combined outreach work, alternative therapies (like auricular acupuncture and herbal teas), crisis intervention, mental health support, psycho-social care, family involvement, and self-help.

The book highlights the transformative journey of both individuals and the community, showcasing collaboration with key figures like Dr. Michael O. Smith and institutions like Birmingham’s NHS and Drug Action Team. It is an informative and inspiring resource for professionals, families, and anyone interested in addiction recovery and social reform.

Monaco 🇲🇨 Grand Prix — Bucket List: Checked Ticked

Back in January, I had a bit of a health scare the kind that makes you pause and rethink what truly matters. Not long after, one of my closest friends surprised me with the trip of a lifetime: the Monaco Grand Prix.

It was everything I had dreamed of… and so much more.

From sipping 25-euro cocktails trackside to sitting directly across from the paddocks of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, the experience was surreal. The roar of the engines, the glamour, the energy it was pure magic.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, we headed to Switzerland and explored the breathtaking beauty of the Swiss Alps. Truly unforgettable.
