Fossil of the Future

This work began with a generative image — an astronaut embedded in rock, as though fossilised or
unearthed from a distant future. I was intrigued by how an AI could imagine such a scene:
something at once ancient and futuristic, human and non-human. By translating that digital vision
into a 3D-printed object, I wanted to see what happens when an algorithmic image becomes matter
— when the virtual hardens into something geological.
I think of Fossil of the Future as a kind of reverse archaeology. Instead of excavating the past, it
speculates forward, turning an AI’s hallucination into a physical relic. The piece reflects on how
generative art blurs the boundary between tool and collaborator — the artist becomes more like a
mediator or translator of machine imagination.
What interests me most is how these processes reveal the shifting temporality of art in the age of
AI. A digital image can feel ancient the moment it’s printed; a fossil can belong to a future that
hasn’t yet arrived. In giving form to this paradox, Fossil of the Future invites us to think about what
creativity means when machines begin to dream alongside us.
