The Woman In Black - Darlington Hippodrome
https://www.darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk/whats-on/The-Woman-In-Black
A Review by Gary Burgham for Bishop FM.
The Woman In Black began as a novel by Scarborough born Susan Hill in 1983. It was subsequently adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt and first performed at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 1987. The play enjoyed over thirteen thousand performances in London’s West End beginning in 1989.
The play tells the story of lawyer, Arthur Kipps (John Mackay), who, during one of his cases, experienced something so awful that he is cursed and haunted by the spectre of a woman in black. He believes the only way he can be freed from the chains of this loathsome malediction is to tell his story. To help him, he hires an actor (Daniel Burke).
In an empty theatre Arthur Kipps stands on stage and begins reading from his account of events as he remembers them. The actor is not impressed. Arthur’s delivery is slow, expressionless and barely more than a whisper. This scene is filled with some wonderful humour as The Actor tries to guide and encourage Arthur.
Eventually they agree that The Actor should assume the role of Arthur to re-enact Arthur’s experiences whilst Arthur plays the other characters involved and provides narration.
What ensues is terrifying.
In a recent interview I did with Daniel Burke, Daniel was talking about the audience reactions to parts of the story. There are scenes, sounds and images that will shock. Your reaction might be totally different to that of the person sitting next to you. I can tell you, dear reader, that I experienced a sudden sense of shock that I almost jumped out of my seat. In another scene a sharp tingle travelled from my lower back to the tips of my toes. No exaggeration.
Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation under Robin Herford’s direction is second to none. This is story telling elevated to the highest level of performance and engagement. I was completely immersed. The performances by John Mackay and Daniel Burke were top class.
The set (Michael Holt) is superb as are the lighting (Kevin Sleep) and sound (Sebastian Frost).
The Woman In Black is an experience never forgotten.
A terrifyingly terrific 5 Star Production.
The Woman In Black runs at Darlington Hippodrome until Sat Jan 10.
