Blackburn Rovers can confirm that Michael O’Neill will not be extending his current agreement to become the club’s permanent Head Coach beyond the conclusion of his existing period with the club.
Following discussions with the club, Michael has decided to continue his long-term commitment to his role as Northern Ireland Head Coach, with a focus on leading the national team towards qualification for the UEFA European Championships in 2028.
Michael joined Blackburn Rovers during an important period of the season and brought significant experience, professionalism and leadership to the football club throughout his time at Ewood Park.
During his spell with the club, he oversaw Championship safety across a demanding 15-game period, securing 20 points from five wins, five draws and five defeats.
Speaking on the decision, Michael O’Neill said: “Blackburn Rovers is a historic football club with a proud tradition and passionate supporters. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with the players, staff and everyone around the club.
“After careful consideration, I have decided that my long-term focus must remain with Northern Ireland and the journey towards the European Championship campaign ahead. I would like to thank the Owners, Board, staff, players and supporters for the welcome and support shown to me during my time at the club.”
Blackburn Rovers’ Chief Operating Officer, Suhail Shaikh, said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Michael for his contribution, professionalism and commitment during his time with the club.
“Michael’s experience and leadership have been highly valued by everyone at Blackburn Rovers. Whilst we are naturally disappointed that he will not be continuing on a permanent basis, we fully respect his decision to focus on his long-term ambitions with Northern Ireland.
“On behalf of the Owners, Board, staff and supporters, we wish Michael every success for the future.”
Blackburn Rovers will now begin the process of identifying and appointing a new permanent Head Coach, with further updates to be communicated in due course.
