David Hogarth’s Partly Sane, Prose Merry and Rhyme is not just a collection of writings—it’s a statement. The author strips back the niceties of conventional poetry and takes aim at the chaotic undercurrents of contemporary life. The tone ranges from humorous to haunting, from defiant to melan...

A Time, Once Upon Ago

Once upon a time ago,
There was many a story being told,
With heroes and ghosts and dragons,
And pirates off searching for gold.
Now things are far more normal,
Troubled souls with little to do,
Telling of much ado about nothing,
Featuring snippets of me and you, too.
The day-to-day details of boredom,
An intensive inspection of lives,
Where hope is well hidden in endings.
Don't be surprised, though, if no one survives.

This is just one of many poems not included in David Hogarth's new collection of irate, non-Romantic, genre-defying poetry. To see the included ones, buy the book. Out very, very soon.

"And suddenly the room changed. At first, he wasn’t sure how. The white walls, the bed, the machines… They all looked the same, but something about them was different. He gasped as he realised what it was. They were no longer real! They were flat, two-dimensional – like paintings. He gripped Mom’s hand harder, trying to steady himself, feeling himself sinking, not down, but in; into her mind, her dream, growing closer and closer as the room ebbed away. Until suddenly he was engulfed, and a black sea rushed towards him, the roar of it a thousand thunders. It crashed him down and pulled him under. He drifted in the currents, in the darkness of the deep. A long way away he could hear the raging of the storm."

Witness to an inexplicable and frightening event, thirteen-year-old Evan Brown must face the unknown to save his family. Kenji is a breathless, wild ride of a read for Young Adults, immersive and emotionally compelling.
