Pain relief post-op as an Endometriosis patient…
I turned down the spinal for pain relief having a major operation & was supposed to be offered it again post op, failing that I was meant to have a morphine button.
Instead, I was started at the bottom of pain relief ladder AND dismissed by nurses raising concerns about my catheter being fitted incorrectly & causing pain.
By late evening, I was finally told they’d get me the morphine & given something in the meantime that contradicted this to the point I could no longer switch to the morphine drip.
Never been in so much pain in my life, begging for help in pain I was describing to be like seconds before giving birth…but constant for hours/days.
My body then started going into shock unable to cope with it & chattering teeth, shaking…still just keep upping my dose of oxycodone to the point it was knocking me out completely, but not touching my pain.
Finally, a team realised the oxycodone was not helping my pain and only making me fall asleep…so I’ve been switched to fentanyl patch alongside other painkillers, in order to get me home.
Gas pain is there, but controlled well with pain killers, peppermint tea & beyou menthol patches.
This pain on my left side however, is significant and hasn’t subsided one bit since I left theatre.
I’ve recently been diagnosed with nutcracker syndrome (compression of the left renal vein - blood can’t drain properly from my left kidney) & my surgeon was encouraging me to get this operated on next as it’s leading pelvic congestion…both of which big causes of pelvic pain.
If this pain doesn’t settle, I’ve been told to follow up in 3-5 days to ensure nothing else is causing it/if there’s anything else can be done to control.
Long story short, if you’re going in for something similar…don’t let them take you from recovery without the spinal or morphine drip…because there’s no hope getting significant pain relief from there.
