The History Alchemist shared:

Spending part of today exploring Beacon Hill Fort at Harwich.

The Redoubt book ever can. The position, the views and thunderstandably gets most of the attention, but Beacon Hill Fort tells a later chapter in the story of the town's coastal defences and seems to be far less widely known.

Being here in person gives a much better sense of the landscape than any map ore relationship with the harbour all start to make sense once you're standing on the ground itself.

A fascinating place and well worth a visit.

Amazing work Richard Clements The History Alchemist

Very pleased to have made my BBC Essex debut this afternoon with Jake Peach discussing The History Alchemist, overlooked Essex history, folklore, strange landscapes, and some of the places and stories that continue to fascinate me across the county.

A big thank you to Jake and the BBC Essex team for making me feel so welcome and relaxed throughout the afternoon. A genuinely enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Hopefully the first of many conversations to come.

Nestled beside Borley Rectory, the church and surrounding grounds have long been associated with chilling paranormal tales. Often referred to as “the most haunted house in England,” Borley became infamous for reports of ghostly footsteps, phantom bells, shadow figures, and the spirit of a nun said to wander the churchyard at dusk. Visitors and investigators alike claimed to witness unexplained phenomena within the rectory walls and near the old church, adding to its eerie legacy. Even after the rectory was destroyed by fire in 1939, the legend of Borley continues to captivate paranormal enthusiasts and skeptics alike.
