The following images were taken in Kinari Bazaar, a street in Chandni Chowk, Purani Dilli, India by Nayanika Sengupta. The photo showcases a rhythmic movement of people, day in and day out, going about their daily lives. Even within the chaos of narrow, crowded streets, you can find a semblance of order.

the way she describes the piece is the following:

"These people have a rhythm they abide by - shopkeepers returning daily to tend to their businesses and visitors returning to purchase items. They navigate the streets in the same way they did the day before, take the same path they did to work, and take the same road back home. It’s about how everyone has a daily routine which is the rhythm of their lives."

‘Look Around You’ is a mixed-media piece that bridges photography and illustration together to form a vertically standing visual of nostalgic Hong Kong. Featuring over a year’s worth of accumulated photographs capturing the everyday streetscape in her city, this bustling scene highlights the mundane that often goes unnoticed and is slowly disappearing towards modernity.

"Rhythm sounds quite organized as a word, but it doesn't have to be. My use of drape in the skirt isn't so irregular and was more put together by eye and what I felt looked good. It creates flow, movement, and curve, all that feel relevant. "

James Jones-Smith - Symmetry In Photography

This was his take on Rhythms:

"I see rhythm through the lens of photography by shooting images with symmetrical and repetitive elements to them. I also think of rhythm as patterns that can take any common interval which stays consistent, yet I also believe that rhythm can be slightly inconsistent but carry the same general theme."

Georgina Bullock – 'Woman Playing the Oud'

This breathtaking piece is based on disappearing indigenous languages to the aftereffects of European colonialization of the Americas, Africa, South Asia, Australia, the pacific islands, and New Zealand.

As Georgina best puts it, she says:

"We are all connected, Brothers and Sisters. Wherever you are in the world. The sounds of the Arabian Oud flow within our blood, when hearing its melody. Your heart beats with its Rhythm. Persian art forms were greatly appreciated around the world for centuries. After the Iranian revolution in 1978, many of the fine galleries and museums were closed, canceling the figures of women within art and these well-known ancient collections. Either destroying the beautiful miniatures or hiding them from the public eye. They were created in history. That history should be studied not removed."

Stoning Mary, written by Debbie Tucker Green, is a play, which deals with three seemingly unrelated stories, set in a world at war. The play was originally written in response to previously demonstrated apathy of white people towards third world issues and purposefully transferred into a contemporary setting. We made some executive decisions about the given circumstances and based them on 21st-century England, still in a world at war.

Chris Duffy's take on 'Rhythm' is a beautiful illustration titled 'Jazz Night', and we can definitely say we want to groove alongside these creatures!

"In a setting as musical and vibrant as a jazz club, rhythm is ubiquitous. From the on-stage artists, performers, the audience’s energy and engagement, to the quiet of the dressing room rehearsal, I wanted to convey the range of emotions and atmospheres that are typical to such an environment in scenes that each have their own rhythm. The illustrations represent the nature of the club’s highest moments to its quietest as it follows the rhythm of its nightly routine."

Carys Tupper – "Center Stage"

"an installation-based work which is based on Baudrillard's theory of the simulacrum - the idea of hyperreality objects repeated so many times that they lose their sense of origin, as symbolized by the Disney characters.

Rhythm is key to the work. Specifically created for the site of the theatre, rhythm is integral to the presentation of the work and performance regarding lighting the work, the movement of the boards on and off stage, and the performers' dynamic movements. Rhythm is essential to life and thus exemplifies the energy and the natural order. It is the rhythmic movement of the bodies in contrast to the flat and oversized figures which ultimately creates the unsettling effect and draws the viewers' attention to the themes of the simulacrum. "

Next on the list, we have Ben Whitthall, an inspiring musician who has come out with a song on Spotify called 'Ode to Chloe'. This is what he had to say about rhythms:

"In mid to late 2020, I wrote a spoken word poetry piece called ‘Ode To Chloe’. It is a free verse piece that I also made into a spoken word track that’s now up on streaming platforms. The subject ‘Chloe’ is a reference to Chloe Burbank, the title of musical artist Joji’s early beats in the lo-fi genre, which was influenced by rhythm and the process of sampling. Through this piece, I establish both my love for the subject as well as finding comfort in the familiar."

Make sure to give him some support by streaming 'Ode to Chloe' and his latest song 'Object Permanence' now on Spotify!
