I'm delighted to share a snippet of my interview with Jason Sheedy and Joshua David Matthews of Heebie Jeebies Pictures. We discuss their latest horror shorts Playback, Madam and Dagnabbit!, their influences as creatives, and we discover how near impossible it is to discuss short films that are just going into festival submissions! I'd like to thank Jason and Joshua for taking the time to meet with me. You can check out the full interview below.

When people think horror events, they usually think queues, autographs and photo ops.

And yes… we’ve got those too 👀

But SLO was always meant to feel like more than that.

Across the weekend there’ll be panels, games, workshops, interactive experiences, indie creators, wellbeing spaces and plenty of strange little corners to explore.

We’re building something calmer, more immersive and community-focused.

Basically: horror convention energy without feeling like you’ve survived a boss battle by lunchtime 🖤

Snow Blinded (2022)
Dir. Brian Lockyer
Available on Amazon Prime and Amazon Video

Shawn and Manny are spending the weekend at Shawn's family cabin. However, as the past and present begin to overlap, Shawn descends into horrific madness.

This is a wonderfully unique independent film with well-developed characters and creativity oozing from every pore. Both Michael Masurkevitch and Mandip Brar are excellent; carrying much of the story alone in a vast setting is incredibly difficult yet each capture your attention in a unique way.

It’s off the wall crazy in all the best ways. I loved the unconventional nature of the presentation; we’re given a straightforward story offset with frenetic editing, jarring score and the overwhelming something more sinister is happening. There are few moments where you feel at peace and I could feel this gnawing away at my nerves with each passing scene.

The final act is incredibly visceral. I personally love a film that isn’t afraid to show scenes that push boundaries and the special makeup effects on display certainly filled that criteria. Masurkevitch deserves his pound of flesh; literally!

Snow Bound is the epitome of low budget midnight madness filmmaking. Whilst it won’t be for everyone, fans of mind-bending cinema that challenges the normal conventions of Hollywood genre efforts will find something to revel in.

Creature of the Pines (2026)
Dir. Chris Ruppert, Tyler Transue
Sub-genre: Found Footage, Mockumentary

Synopsis: A documentary investigation into Pine Hollow disappearances reveals a presence lurking deep within the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

As an avid fan of found footage and mockumentary horror films, you know I jumped at the chance to review Creature of the Pines. We start as a mockumentary the disappearance of two sets of hikers. Then it flips into found footage and we’re thrown into tapes discovered on the campsite of the very same documentary crew responsible for the first two acts of the feature. This is where I found my interest peaked.

We have some very well executed sound design featuring haunting mimics of human voices by unknown creatures lurking in the woods. The use of go-pro cameras in trees and inside tents also provides some exciting angles of events as they unfold.

The scares are there but lurk within the final act. This isn’t a slow burn feature as there’s plenty to keep you entertained, yet I found the payoff effective. The camerawork and editing on display leaned itself perfectly to these sub-genres, allowing the filmmakers to take some risks that creatively may not have been possible in a limited budget. Slow reveals of the creature early on also help to build tension.

This will be one for the found footage fans with an insatiable thirst for true crime and unexplained phenomena.

Breeders
Dir. Suri Grenell

Screened for as part of their body horror shorts selection, Breeders is an all out assault on the senses providing all the joy of 80's splatter features neatly wrapped in a modern setting with cautionary themes. Everything about this is a delight, from the striking colour palette, the creepy practical effects, our entrancing score and the solid cast performances. The vision from director Suri Grenell is clear and my goodness if this isn't a filmmaker to have on your radar then you're truly missing out! Breeders is currently on the film festival circuit but keep it on your watchlist as no doubt it'll be coming to Earth real soon.

No One Will Hear Your Scream (2025)
Dir. Mariano Cattaneo
Available to purchase on DVD and Blu Ray
Digital release on iTunes, Fandango, Amazon, Tubi, Hoopla and Plex

Synopsis: While an entire country is focused on the 1990 World Cup in Italy, someone takes advantage of Argentina’s matches to commit brutal murders.

From the outset the worldbuilding for No One Will Hear Your Scream is meticulous. Between footage of the 1990 World Cup, audible bites of commentary and the playful mix of a synth and classic rock soundtrack, I was transported back to a simpler time; although I have to admit, it’s not the case for some of our characters…

From the opening kill we have some fun plot choices. Our intended first victim puts up a hell of a fight yet is keen to show their priorities lie in finding out if their beloved Argentina can secure a win, shooting glimpses at the TV set during the onslaught. As a sports fan, this had me chuckling as I’d likely do the same if my beloved team were moments from victory!

The casting here is on point, with characters that are equal parts relatable and enjoyable to watch. Whilst the plot doesn’t necessarily redefine the genre, it’s clear Director Mariano Cattaneo has created a passion project packed full of love for slasher movies we all adore in the genre. There’s also a tinge of Giallo soul here too, with some stylish artistic flair on display. It’s a true homage to filmmakers of the era and I feel Millennials will bask in the glory of the nostalgia this feature provides.

This is the second Argentinian horror I’ve seen in recent months and have to say they’re a market to keep your eye on! If you’re a fan of true independent filmmaking, films with a nostalgic edge and great character development, be sure to add No One Will Hear Your Scream to your watchlist.

I’d like to thank .creative.mkt and for the opportunity to review.
