Nice that the Voltage release - Ghost Dance's The Silent Shout gets mentioned here as some of Anne Marie's best work.
"5 Wailing Women of the Underworld"
each one a spectral force in her own right.
1. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
- Ethereal glossolalia and celestial emotion. Her voice is less sung than conjured—floating between dream pop and gothic mysticism. Think Heaven or Las Vegas as a haunted cathedral.
2. Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
- Operatic, ancient, and transcendent. She sings in invented languages, channeling timeless sorrow and spiritual grandeur. Her work on The Host of Seraphim and Gladiator is pure ritual.
3. Anne-Marie Hurst (Skeletal Family, Ghost Dance)
- Punk-goth firebrand with soaring vocals and fierce stagecraft. Her voice carries urgency and defiance, especially on Promised Land and Ghost Dance’s The Silent Shout.
4. Eva O (Shadow Project, Christian Death)
- The “Queen of Darkness” herself. Her vocals are raw, ritualistic, and commanding—equal parts deathrock snarl and spiritual lament. Damnation/Salvation is a descent and resurrection.
5. Gitane Demone (Christian Death, solo)
- Cabaret decadence meets gothic jazz. Her voice is sultry, theatrical, and emotionally unfiltered. From Dream Home Heartache with Rozz Williams to her solo Stars of Trash, she’s a noir priestess.
