L'amour pour le fantôme de Jennifer Soundtrack
“L'amour pour le fantôme de Jennifer” is a little-known French gothic thriller released in the early 70’s. It was one of several low budget productions produced under the Génie Maléfique umbrella, a front company for organised crime that was used to move and launder drugs money through Europe.
The film had a short run in France, (curtailed when the film was pulled from theatres after it’s director was arrested in a prostitution scandal), but enjoyed a longer run in British cinemas (dubbed very badly into English) as part of a double bill with the British made but French set horror film “And soon the darkness”.
Only a limited number of prints were ever made (remember, it was not produced to be a success, only to hide and clean dirty money) and after Génie Maléfique wound up operations to avoid ongoing attention of the authorities, no effort was made to retain or store any copies of the film. As a consequence, no known complete prints of either the French or English dubbed versions exist, the only traces left being publicity photographs, posters, and clips from surviving movie trailer reels of the time.
The original soundtrack recordings fared little better, having been stored and forgotten in a Paris studio basement, to be found decades later. Due to there being no claim to the rights or any particular interest in these tapes, they subsequently passed from person to person as part of a salvage “job lot” until eventually making their way to Ubertroll Recordings.
The basis of the original film soundtrack were 3 songs/tunes originally released in the late 60’s by unknown pop crooner Nick Valentino on another Génie Maléfique money laundering front “Now Records”, based in Soho London.
As Now Records fully owned all the rights to the material, the tracks were later handed to the mob connected orchestra leader Hubert Gros to develop the musical themes into a score and also produce French versions of the songs. It’s said he was paid in co***ne for his work.
It is these Gros recordings on badly deteriorated reel to reel tape that were salvaged.
These tracks have now been reconstructed into an estimation of what once was using a combination copying, sampling, A.I. reconstruction, re-recording and pure guesswork to fill in blanks and finally remixed by The Evil Genius Organisation for this Ubertroll Recordings soundtrack release.
Also included are reconstructions the original English Language Nick Valentino recordings.
