Brown Cows looking fabulous amongst the herbal ley 🙌

August 2026... hopefully we’re coming towards the end of this drought season. Thankfully, we’ve had chicory and clover still growing (with their deeper roots), allowing us to have some greenery.

We’re nearing the end of growth like this now, though. The paddocks behind the cows are simply just not doing well. We’ve really noticed growth slow down over the last month, so we haven’t got any covers to go in to with the cows. The chicory is just about hanging on in there, but we can see the clover starting to dry up and not grow.

Feeding silage bales out to the cows has helped us prolong the rotation, so we haven’t gone through these higher covers as quickly. We started to feed out beginning of July, and we are totally fed up of feeding silage now 😂

We can’t wait to see some rain!! 🌧️🤞

It's a special day today, it's my Els bells birthday 🥰

8 glorious years with this gorgeous girl, she never fails to make me smile 😊 I'd definitely be lost without her, my little shadow!

It’s been a busy week on the farm and we’re still very much finding our feet… but progress is happening 🙌🏼

The cows are starting to graze well on the gate system, and our main focus right now is getting bactos and SCC down so we can start selling milk 🥛

Calving kicked off at the start of the week… one cow started and then four quickly followed 😂

Midweek brought a bit of chaos.... we woke up to no power to the robots, so the cows went about 7 hours without being milked, which knocked their routine. I had also booked in milk recording the same day, so that also had to be pushed back 🤦🏻‍♀️

The bulk tank has also been keeping us on our toes… deciding not to cool or wash properly, so that’s meant another engineer visit.

We’ve been pushing to get consistent milk samples through with NMR to understand our baselines for bactos, SCC, butterfat and protein, but with everything going on the results have been a bit up and down. 🙃

On the plus side, dry cows and heifers are now out and loving life, with plenty of zoomies in the field 😅

We also had Ash come and visit us to lend a hand, which was a big help.

A full on week of frustrations, problem solving and a bit of tail chasing… but progress is being made.
