There is a saying in the photography world: 'Don't work with children & animals.' The saying should add also 30-plus lively members of a carnival club. Yesterday, a few of the Ramblers club very kindly agreed to pose for a quick group shot on the Cornhill, nearly a disaster for me. One failing to get them into an interesting group, second, coping with the very harsh, low sun and dark shadows. With help from Photoshop I have managed to salvage something, but it is way below the standard I would expect for my group shots. Sorry Ramblers. 1 X before, and a couple of edited ones. Regards, Brian. (Special thanks to the members of Vagabonds CC for their help)

Here in Bridgwater, prior to the Carnival procession in November, the members of the Carnival Clubs put on a two-week concert each year. Here, mostly of interest to the performers, are just a few pictures taken outside of the Town Hall from earlier years. (Some of the pictures have been edited)

Many people, no doubt, will say, mind your own busniess, but I could not resist the chance, rightly or wrongly, to tweak this photo. I will remove this post if anyone is offended. Brian. Before and after.

Bridgwater Half Marathon 2025 – A Community Triumph

From storm clouds to sunshine, Bridgwater put on a show to remember. Over 600 runners took to the start line this year, braving the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K routes with grit, determination, and plenty of smiles along the way.
The morning began with thunder, lightning and torrential rain during the set-up, but by race time the skies had cleared, leaving a warm, bright backdrop for what turned out to be one of Bridgwater’s proudest days.
Fuelled by bacon rolls, hog roast, and the cheers of an incredible volunteer team of over 80 marshals, admin and support, the runners enjoyed a course that’s quickly earning a reputation as one of the friendliest and most enjoyable in the South West. Feedback has been nothing short of glowing, praising not only the organisation but also the welcoming atmosphere that makes this event so special.

Hosted at Morganians R.F.C., and raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK, the Bridgwater Half Marathon is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of community spirit, resilience, and togetherness.

This is a real gem in Bridgwater’s crown.

VJ CELEBRATION
Bridgwater Firecrackers Women’s Institute held a celebration event on September 2nd 2025 to commemorate VJ Day. Those attending were encouraged to dress either in 1940’s style or patriotic red, white and blue. The costumes included several Land Girls and even a Lyons Corner House waitress.
The event was led by Joint President Jenny Aldridge whilst Teresa Dando (also Bridgwater Firecrackers Joint President) provided some brilliant food tasters made from authentic WWII recipes for everyone to try. Other members of the committee provided a delicious meal and all enjoyed a beautifully decorated cake made by Pam Stathers.
The “Knit and Natter” group have been knitting and crocheting mountains of poppies and hand-made soldiers representing the three services and Chelsea Pensioners. These were displayed on netting and used to decorate the stage. The netting will be used in Kings square for Remembrance Sunday and the plan is to add more to this in future years. The display also included other hand-made figures representing service personnel, nursing personnel and even a Winston Churchill !!
We were honoured to host some retired Service Personnel who included:
- Colonel Michael Staunton and Captain Avril Staunton who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
- John Hardy who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (later the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps). John was accompanied by his wife Colleen.
- Tom Hardy who served in the Royal Corps of Transport and looked superb in his Chelsea Pensioner Uniform.
- Nick Pippard who served in the Royal Artillery. Nick was accompanied by his wife Dawn.
- Sheila Welland who served in the Royal Military Police
The military guests were all presented with a hand-made soldier as a memento of the evening and Tom Hardy was invited to cut the celebration cake.
Other special guests included Somerset County and Knoll Group WI officials including our County Chair Shirley Routley. We also welcomed some WI members from other institutes within the Knoll Group.
We were superbly entertained by singer Maria Florey with a selection of war time favourites. Many of those present also enjoyed joining in with the songs, both singing and dancing. It was a very poignant evening - but also very lively, as would have been the case in 1945.
The raffle prizes, reflecting the 1940’s theme, comprised mainly of hampers containing vegetables, home-made preserves, tins of fruit and packets of tea and coffee.
Bridgwater Firecrackers WI would like to extend their thanks to all who attended and contributed to this event for making it a truly memorable evening and we hope it was a fitting tribute to all who served in the Far East during WWII.

Re: Flybri Sceanic Flights. Management not happy. Pilot lost his way. Coverage not good over Wembdon. His excuse was low cloud and poor visibility. Will arrange another flight. Dont forget you can use tab bar to stop and start.
