Lewes District Council is planning a small change to how our waste is collected – and it could make a big difference for the environment.

General waste collections will switch from weekly to fortnightly. But don’t worry, food waste will still be collected weekly and recycling stays fortnightly too.

Why the change?

👉 On average, our general bins are less than half full each week
👉 Fewer collection rounds means lower fuel use, fewer emissions and more money for other services
👉 Other councils doing the same have seen better recycling rates

Food waste makes up 38% of our general waste, but it doesn’t need to! The council’s free food waste collection service can take all your leftovers, teabags and even pet food scraps. It’s collected by a fleet of electric vehicles and turned into compost to help local farmers grow food. Plus, it helps keep your bins cleaner and less smelly between collections.

Have you heard of HOMELINK? It’s a small local charity doing big things in Lewes District, including right here in Seaford.

Since 1998, HOMELINK has helped hundreds of people into secure housing by offering interest-free loans to cover deposits and first month’s rent - something many people can't afford up front.

But their support doesn’t stop there. With a professional referral, they can also provide essential household items like white goods, beds, curtains and carpets. Many of their clients are starting over, often from homelessness or when leaving emergency housing.

As John Butler from Seaford Baptist Church says, "HOMELINK is here to help anyone in need - of any faith or none."

Want to support their work? You can:

✔️ Donate (one-off or regular donations are welcome - they're gift-aided too)
✔️ Volunteer
✔️ Organise a fundraiser
✔️ Invite John to speak at your group or event

Your kindness can help someone take that first step into a safe and stable home.

Seaford and Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association has been helping to keep our community safe and connected for years, but it's currently at risk of winding down unless new volunteers step forward.

Without fresh support, the committee will begin the formal wind-up process in February 2026.

Here’s how you can help:

👉 Free time? Just an hour or two a week would be great!
👉 Join a friendly committee meeting every few months
👉 All you need is a heart for the community and a laptop/PC
👉 No heavy admin, no paperwork - it’s all streamlined and easy

It’s a great way to give back, meet neighbours and help make Seaford a safe and supportive place to live.
