I’m very sad to hear of the sudden passing of Jilly Cooper. Riders came out in 1985, when I was aged 11/12 and at the start of my junior show-jumping period - my photo is from 1986, I think, a team event at Chepstow. Riders (and then Rivals) meant everything to me, it was clever and reckless and joyful, and I was desperate to step into its pages. I don’t think I entirely understood that it was fiction. My social world was not posh at all, but that didn’t matter - I knew I would belong because everyone in Jilly-world was equally mad about horses and dogs. And I longed to have a pair of fancy seamless jodphurs from the book cover, rather than my slightly baggy ones 😆 Later, as a writer, Jilly Cooper had much to teach about rich characters, social observation and unashamedly commercial fiction. Thanks, Jilly, for the books and horses. I hope your heaven is a fabulous stud yard full of stallions 🐎

Earlier this year, I wrote a piece for the Bookseller about fake book reviews on Goodreads — bad ratings being posted for books that aren’t even published yet — and now the BBC have picked up the case… here’s their documentary. Hopefully, Goodreads will listen and tighten their rules! (Thanks Awais for also taking part and Cathy at Kemptown Bookshop for hosting our interview.)

Hanging out in superb company for this pick of September crime fiction releases - inc the new Cormoran Strike, the latest Slow Horses, and Guilt Trip 🙂

Thanks Crime Monthly for a lovely review:

“Darkly addictive and superbly twisty, Guilt Trip blends the intensity of a missing-children thriller with a razor-sharp dissection of parental ambition and fear. Jo Furniss turns the screw with every chapter, keeping loyalties shifting until the final page. Tense, timely, and impossible to put down.”

The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith Sphere, £30 The Brief: The eighth Cormoran Strike novel plunges the detective duo into a case of missing men, hidden loyalties, and a body found in a vault of silver. The Suspects: Cormoran Strike, relentless in pursuit of truth but distracted by his att

Out today! Here’s my fifth novel - another Agatha Christie-style mystery where I lock a lot of suspects into a confined space - a school where the parents behave worse than the kids… and today’s the day they will learn a lesson.

Our Story

I write novels about ordinary women in extraordinary situations that challenge their resilience, their feminism, and maybe even their lives.

I'm published by LAKE UNION at Amazon Publishing, and represented by Danielle Egan-Miller at Browne and Miller.
