There was a bit more to the production and mixing brief that gave me for this song but the Phoebe Bridgers reference definitely was something to which I paid more attention - probably because I’m a fan but also, sometimes that’s enough for me to get on with things. .

Drawing on my love for big, wide, epic guitar music and cinematic post-rock - working on the excellent home recorded demo of Dare to Hope by .w.stevenson I took everything up several notches. Chunkier & more vivid drums, real bass with plenty of edge, subtle spacial vocal effects and guitars that feel more immersive, dynamic & up-front.

Netherlands based Alt-Pop artist Noëmi Françoise Hofstede sends me her minimal, unique and emotionally charged Ableton demos with her ideas about how she imagines them being developed & finished. Very fun! And a great balance of direction vs letting me experiment instinctually. Her brilliantly emotive, immersive and eclectic EP ‘Red’ is out on physical and streaming. So much to love about the new single release from Beth Sarah ! It’s a bit of a journey full of reflection, melancholy, hope and frustration and sonically I felt that it would be best served in a vivid, rich, energetic and bold way but with subtleties and details that reward repeated listens.

Was really enjoyable taking this song from demo to final mix. Post-rock tinged indie-folk from the Scottish highlands with a widescreen, melancholic and somewhat intimate character. Guitars go from delicate & spindly to full blown, overdriven epic. Tension and release. It took a bit of work to get the right dynamics and clarity but I love how it came out.
