You’ll Be Shocked by How Often These Coastguard Crews Are Called to Rescue

Birling Gap and Eastbourne Coastguard Among Busiest in the UK

The Birling Gap and Eastbourne Coastguard teams are among the busiest units in the country, responding to hundreds of incidents each year.

Figures up to New Year’s Eve show Eastbourne Coastguard attended 243 call-outs, while Birling Gap responded to 245 incidents.

The high demand reflects the challenges of policing a busy and hazardous stretch of coastline.

Both teams work closely together, often supporting each other at major or complex incidents.

They regularly operate alongside other emergency services, including the RNLI, Sussex Police, SECAmb, air ambulance crews and Coastguard helicopters.

Incidents range from cliff rescues and missing persons to medical emergencies and maritime searches.

Notably, the teams are equipped with the longest rescue ropes in the Coastguard, enabling them to reach casualties in difficult and dangerous terrain.

The figures highlight the vital role these volunteers play in keeping people safe along the coast.

Coastguard teams continue to provide 24/7 cover, whatever the conditions.

Leave No Trace Brighton removes over 800kg of waste from seafront in 2025

A community-led environmental group has removed more than 800kg of waste from Brighton’s seafront over the past year, helping to protect the city’s coastal and marine environment.

Leave No Trace Brighton has published its end-of-year data for 2025, revealing that the vast majority of the waste collected was plastic, with volunteers managing to recycle 78 per cent of everything removed from the shoreline.

The group says the data gathered throughout the year is already shaping future action, with a series of new, action-based initiatives set to be announced.

By carefully recording the type and source of waste found, volunteers were able to identify clear seasonal trends. Plastic litter was most prevalent during the summer months, largely due to irresponsibly discarded waste, while fishing-related debris was more common during the winter.

As a result, Leave No Trace Brighton has confirmed that in 2026 it will focus on tackling single-use plastics, working to reduce their sale and consumption by informing and empowering people to make more sustainable choices. The group will also continue raising awareness of fishing waste and its impact on the local coastline.

The organisation paid tribute to the volunteers who took part throughout the year, thanking everyone who gave their time to protect Brighton’s beaches.

Special thanks were also given to community partners Sea Lanes Brighton, which has already taken action by eliminating all non-essential single-use plastics from its operation as a direct result of the data collected.

Further support was acknowledged from the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme, Brighton & Hove City Council, and recycling partners ANLRS and REAP UK, who helped ensure as much waste as possible was diverted away from landfill.

Leave No Trace Brighton said it is looking forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead and welcoming volunteers back to the beach in 2026.

Newhaven RNLI Marks Major Leadership Change After 40 Years of Service

Newhaven RNLI is preparing for a significant moment in its history in 2026 as Roger Cohen MBE steps down from his role as Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM), bringing to a close an extraordinary 40 years of voluntary service with the RNLI.

Roger leaves behind what colleagues describe as a “proud and steady ship”, handing over leadership to incoming LOM Simon Nelson. Over his seven years in charge at Newhaven, Roger led the station through a period of sustained growth, expanding both crew and shore-based volunteer teams and strengthening operational capability.

Under his leadership, the station’s Severn class lifeboat maintained an excellent service record, taking part in numerous significant rescues and saving many lives at sea. Roger also oversaw the successful two-year trial, training programme and permanent addition of the D-class lifeboat, transforming Newhaven into a multi-asset station.

Roger’s RNLI journey began as a crew member and evolved into a key operational leadership role, contributing to hundreds of launches over four decades. Awarded an MBE for his services to the charity, his legacy is widely recognised for an inclusive “One Team” leadership style and a lasting impact on the station’s growth and culture.

Stepping into the role, Simon Nelson brings extensive experience in maritime rescue and public service. He began as a teenage Coastguard cliff rescue volunteer, served in the Royal Navy, and later spent 30 years in policing, reaching the rank of Superintendent. His policing career included senior command roles for fi****ms, public order and major public events. More recently, Simon has volunteered as part of Newhaven RNLI’s Launch Authority team and will complete a three-month handover into the LOM role.

Speaking about the transition, Simon said:
“Roger has been described as the rock we stand on and the glue that keeps us together. He has led us to a place with high standards and where it is a joy and privilege for our ‘One Team’ to volunteer. I’m so pleased that he will remain in our team as a volunteer whilst we continue to build on progress so far and save more lives at sea.”

Although stepping down as Lifeboat Operations Manager, Roger Cohen MBE will remain an active volunteer at Newhaven RNLI, continuing his lifelong commitment to saving lives at sea.

Boxing Day Lifeboat Shout Off Shoreham Beach

An RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched on Boxing Day after reports of a kitefoiler in difficulty off Shoreham Beach.

The call came in on Friday, prompting the lifeboat crew to respond quickly to the scene. The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) at Shoreham maintained a visual watch on the kitefoiler while the RNLI made its way to the location.

On arrival, crews assessed the situation and confirmed the kitefoiler was safe and not in need of assistance. The incident was later classified as a good intent call, highlighting the importance of the public reporting concerns at sea when someone may be at risk.

The RNLI has thanked NCI Shoreham for their support and coordination during the incident.

🚤 If you’re concerned about someone at sea, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Sharing for awareness - Our Thoughts Go Out to All Involved

Tragic Christmas Day Swim in Budleigh Salterton – Two Men Missing at Sea,

Budleigh Salterton, Devon – 25 December 2025 – Emergency services were called to Budleigh Salterton at 10.25am this Christmas Day after reports of swimmers struggling in treacherous waters during the traditional festive dip along the Jurassic Coast.

Hundreds had gathered on the shoreline when severe weather caused multiple swimmers to get into difficulty. RNLI lifeboats, Exmouth and Beer Coastguard teams, search and rescue helicopters, and other emergency services responded to the incident. Several people were safely rescued, with two receiving medical treatment at the scene and one taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Despite extensive searches, the Coastguard has now suspended the operation. Two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, remain missing. Their families have been informed, and police enquiries on land continue.

Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar said:
"Our thoughts remain firmly with the families and friends of the two men who are currently missing and to all who may have witnessed and be impacted by the incident."

The Coastguard and RNLI urge the public to exercise extreme caution if entering the sea. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Devon & Cornwall Police on 101, quoting log 191 of 25/12/25.
