A brand new feature-length documentary produced by us for Amazon Prime Video drops this Sunday (27th July):
THE FACEBOOK HONEYTRAP: CATCHING A KILLER
It was humbling to be trusted to tell this extraordinary story by a remarkable woman, Lehanne Sergison.
In 2014, Lehanne’s aunt, Christine Robinson, was murdered in South Africa. Unable to travel because of a chronic lung condition, Lehanne was still determined to help catch Christine’s killer. With little sign of a meaningful investigation in South Africa and no real support from the British Government, she turned to Facebook. There, she discovered the man suspected of the murder was active online under multiple aliases, including on a dating site. Concerned for other women's safety, Lehanne created a fake Facebook profile, set a honeytrap, and lured the suspect into a romantic online relationship. With the help of some incredible people in South Africa, her efforts eventually led police to his door.
What Lehanne did over several years was astonishing. But it’s something she wished she never had to do—and a story she never wanted to be part of, but she also knew that telling that story might positively impact others.
As a result, the film recounts what happened in the compelling way the story deserves, while also honouring Christine’s life, offering hope to others seeking justice, and highlights the appalling levels of violence and femicide women are subjected to globally.
The credits below include our core team at Middlechild, alongside Andy and Katie from our sister company, Northern Child. But many others—on and off screen, in the UK and South Africa—played a key role in bringing this film to life. We’re deeply grateful to them all.
Thanks to Sphere Abacus, Anna Sadowy, and Amazon Prime Video for helping us share Lehanne’s story and the vital issues it raises.
